Depression is defined as a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for weeks or longer. According to a report published in the “Archives of General Psychiatry,” an estimated 14.8 million Americans ages 18 and older are affected by major depression every year. Studies have shown that the illness can be caused by a list of factors, but I personally believe that overall people in American society are not reflecting on how to learn from their mistakes and accept bad things that happen, therefore they are incapable of being completely fulfilled, and undergo depression. When one can completely embrace life for both its negative and positive aspects, and find different ways to relieve stress or tension, they can then continue life with an enlightened spirit. As a person who has experienced a period of depression and anxiety, I understand that there are many ways of dealing with the disorder. One of the most popular today is the use of prescription antidepressants. Some of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants are called reuptake inhibitors.
Reuptake inhibitors work by keeping levels of neurotransmitters in the brain high, possibly improving communication between the nerve cells, which can strengthen circuits in the brain that regulate mood. When suffering depression, one shouldn’t punish themselves for bad behavior, but instead praise themselves for the good. Working on taking life day by day is essential in recovery. Lastly, a person battling depression should always try to have fun. Planning things that they used to enjoy, if not trying something new, has been shown to help patients substantially.
Though this may be difficult, getting to know yourself again or surrounding yourself with people who care about you can help to make this step easier. These are just some of the many alternatives to prescription antidepressants that are natural, healthy, and risk free. Though these steps won’t make depression disappear overnight, with time and perseverance one suffering depression will find their self in a much more peaceful state of mind without the use of medication.
