Depression is a serious illness and by some degree the most serious disease affecting society. Scientists think they have finally figured out what goes wrong. There has never been any doubt that depression is a mental illness with a physical basis in the brain’s makeup. For many people, medical molecules can counteract the chemistry of despair. They don’t understand that the drugs work as well as they do, and they don’t know why it usually takes a few weeks for the drugs to “kick in” with the anti-depressant.
Lately scientists have found that adult brains can make new brain cells. The idea of making new brain cells has been debated since the theory was that the brain you had was the brain you had. They didn’t think it was possible to make new cells. Recent evidence has shown that clincal depression may be caused by a failure by the brain to grow new neurons.
