Reaction Paper: Diamonds of Conflict This was an interesting article that caused me to think a lot of our buying practices. We are never aware of what we do now, can turn into some sort of conflict down the road. It is a shame how the purchase of diamonds can finance army’s to fight inhuman and pointless wars with tons of innocent individuals. Is something of beauty and something from the earth we have put a materialistic value on, worth the lives of tens of thousands of people? I think that we have seen this before in other manners.
For instance the purchase of illegal drugs and such finances violence and conflicts in other countries, yet we still have not been able to combat that problem. The problem with the conflict diamonds is that the jewelers do not care more or less where the diamonds have come from. They just want to make money, and sadly as long as they are making money they won’t do anything to make an effort to make sure they are not purchasing conflict diamonds. I think that the only way we can combat conflict diamonds, is by educating the buyers of this arising issue, and making sure they check for this. I don’t think many merchants will check to see where the diamonds are coming from, because they just want to make money, but if the customers get involved with what they are investing a good deal of money in, then we can somewhat resolve the issue of combat diamonds.
