With political parties changing where they stand on an issue from one moment to the next before, during, and after elections, as well as avoiding issues to remain politically correct, choosing a party to belong to has become almost an impossible task and has led to the rising of several other political parties such as, Libertarians, The Green Party, Constitution Party, Reform Party, and Natural Law Party being the most active. More Americans are voting based on their own personal beliefs regarding each issue rather than those represented by a specific political party and over the last decade the candidates have increasingly been catering to the individualist rather than sticking to one ideology. Democrats, represented by the donkey, are the oldest political party in the United States. Created in the 1790s in response to slavery and land control and consistently representing the common people, members lean towards a more liberal approach to government focusing on the whole and not the individual.
Throughout the history of the Democratic Party there is a general pattern that emerges to give us a basis of the party. Democrats historically represent that it is the governments’ job to take care of the people, prefer an organized controlled market with as few outsourced commitments as necessary. Members promote stronger gun control, the death penalty, personal choice regarding abortion, sharing of economic deficiencies while supporting the less fortunate with welfare programs and government aid, and have a strong standing on the separation of church and state including prayer in schools.

Taking a more individual perspective, some principles highlighting republicanism are, citizen responsibility as necessary to operate the government, members of this party tend to embrace a free market with definite international contracts enthusiastically. They strongly support the right to bear arms, and the death penalty, and oppose abortion, and welfare programs to support the less fortunate. Republicans also agree with the separation of church and state with some exceptions approving of prayer in schools.

Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Calvin Coolidge, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and George Bush Jr. re all associated with the Republican Party. Third Parties form when groups disagree with one of the two major parties usually on one specific topic and want to get their message across which, in a tight race a third party candidate can take votes from one of the major parties which in turn could cost them an election. The Libertarian Party is the largest and oldest third party and quickly growing. Created in 1971 with the motto “Minimum Government, Maximum Freedom”4 it targets individuals’ rationality, and believe that people are responsible for themselves and government authority should be limited to those that cause harm to others.

A few of the major third party presidential candidates include Ross Perot (Reform Party), Ralph Nader (Green Party), Ron Paul (Libertarian), and Gary Johnson (Libertarian) all have made the presidential ballot in the recent years. While there are many third parties their impact on policies is mainly at the polls and they fail to form solidly in part due to financial backing and government related deadlines. 5 Personally I am among the many of those that actually vote and vote according to my own belief system and not based on a political party.
I have noticed a trend that the older I get the more control I think the government should have but, not so much as a way to control the people than as a way to protect the integrity of our nation collectively. The humanity factor has dissolved more and more over every generation and society as a whole has become more and more selfish and unwilling to sacrifice for good of the whole. I see the effect of “freedom” destroying the moral fiber we try so hard to maintain and instill in our families and I would gladly give up many of my rights to protect the future of generations to come.

I have said it so many times and will continue to say it, just because we have a right to do something does not make it right to do so. Just as the anti-federalists fought to have the bill of rights in our constitution when others felt that they were implied or understood, I believe that those things that should be a foundation of every individual should now be spelled out and included. Principles such as self-control, responsibility, accountability, and the Golden Rule (shared by many different religions and belief systems) of “do to others as you would have them do to you. 6 Our founding fathers, federalist or anti-federalists, both probably found these things to be understood. In my life they are, I have very high standards not only for myself but for those who are a part of my life including family. I have set firm boundaries that I abide by and expect others to do so as well and, when crossed there are definitive consequences for. I care about the quality of the people regardless of the quantity so, I vote for what I believe to be the good of the whole and not just for me and mine.
It is not about me it is about us and it is about the protection of our integrity and not about protection of extreme freedom. We share this nation and inhabit it together, we rejoice in it and take pride that it is ours, and we share it with each other the good and the bad. In the end regardless of my own understanding I will always take my father’s word to be above it all “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. ”7
