In November 2000, a San Jose man was riding in a female coworker’s car when he thought he heard a child moaning. According to Sergeant Steve Dixon of the San Jose Police Department, the man “looked in the back seat. There was no one there. He looked at her [his coworker]. She looked very nervous. She began talking very loudly. He heard the moaning several times. She turned up the radio, apparently to drown out the sounds.” The man later called the police, and the woman was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment after her two sons, ages five and seven, told authorities that their mother would sometimes lock them in the trunk of her Honda Civic when she went to work. In describing this incident, Dixon stated, “It’s almost unbelievable.”
The most shocking part about this story is that it is “almost” unbelievable. Indeed this act is not the worst case of child abuse out there. With so many different cases of child abuse being reported this story is quite believable.

Physical abuse in a child is the most noticeable. It is defined as excessive intentional physical injury to a child or excessive corporal punishment of a child. Corporal punishment by a parent is subject to interpretation. Generally speaking some forms of mild punishment which do not leave marks are considered within parental discretion. Punishment that cause marks that last more than a few minutes can be seen as abuse. Also using anything other than your hand to strike a child is considered abuse. Excessive physical discipline can also be seen as child abuse. It may be harmful and dangerous to children. Small children can be killed by minor acts of physical violence. Any severe beating with an object, forceful shaking, intentional burning and so on, are all acts of intentional infliction of pain and are criminal behaviors. People wonder how parents can harm their child in such a way. In most cases the cause of these acts of violence is a result of how the person was raised. Any person who has been raised in an environment of violence may be more likely to inflict violence on others.
Child neglect is also a form of child abuse. When it deals with the child’s welfare it is generally considered criminal behavior. Child neglect is a diagnosis for children who are poorly cared for, not fed properly, improperly clothed, denied proper medical care, or treated with indifference to a point that it causes damage or suffering. For a child who is unwell failure to continue to get help for a child who is not doing well may be interpreted as another form of neglect. This can result in action by child protective services that may result in children being removed from the home and placed in foster care. Children can also suffer another kind of neglect. Emotional neglect is a condition in which children do not get proper attention from their parents or guardians. In cases of mild emotional neglect children grow rebellious. In more severe cases, babies and younger children, it can result in abnormal behavior. Such as poor bonging with other people, poor interaction skills with other children and inappropriate attachment to anyone who pays attention to them.

Child neglect and emotional neglect can cause another form of child abuse called Failure to thrive. A condition in which children fail to physically develop to their full genetic potential. It is caused, most commonly, by medical conditions that can result in children not growing as expected. At times though it can be caused by intentional or unintentional behavior by the parent. Munchausen by proxy syndrome, another serious form of child abuse, is a serious psychiatric disorder of parents or guardians of children. The parent or guardian intentionally or unintentionally, causes signs and symptoms of disease in the child they are caring for. They do this, not for the good of the child, but generally to satisfy their own abnormal need. By literally making the child sick, the parent or guardian has excessive contact with doctors and hospitals. Children undergo unnecessary testing and treatment for diseases that they do not have.
The first step in helping abused or neglected children is learning to recognize the signs of child abuse and neglect. A single sign does not prove child abuse is occurring in a family, but a closer look at the situation may be needed when these signs appear repeatedly or in combination.
Parents and all reporters of abuse must realize that accusations of abuse are taken very seriously by law enforcement, child abuse professionals, and prosecutors. While the reporter of abuse is granted immunity from any liability when they make reports about possible abuse, such reports should be done in good faith only. This is not always the case. Some people are willing to use allegations of abuse to achieve their own goals at the cost of an accused person. Once allegations of abuse are made, the general belief by the authorities is that accusations are true until proven otherwise. False accusations can rarely be taken back without very significant damage to families and the lives of the accused person.
Child abuse in any form is a criminal act. It is wrong and immoral. Child abuse is an increasing problem today. Children who are abuse physically, are raised in an abusive environment, when they reach adulthood are more likely to physically harm their own children. And so the cycle of abuse continues. There is no way to eliminate child abuse. Not when there are conditions like Munchausen by proxy syndrome and Pedophilia. Thought, if we work hard and keep on the lookout for possible child abuse, perhaps we can slow down this rising problem.
