When dealing with the potential disadvantages for Sullivan University to offer daycare to its students and to house a daycare facility on campus. First we must understand the law that deals with daycares and all the necessary equipment and training that goes along with operating a daycare. One of the disadvantages is that child care centers generally cannot accommodate parents’ late or flexible hours. This is due to having to pay more employees or pay the current employees over time. Normal classes usually start around 7a.m. and goes to 9p.m. so that means that the daycare must be in operation between those hours. This cause for more money and one of the major questions is if these students can afford to pay daycare and their tuition also. Because many students receive some type of reduced tuition, grants, scholarships or subsidized tuition, the school will be forced to charge the normal rate for child care to make a profit. Even though child care has become a booming business in America, due to most homes having to be duel workers just to make it in these trouble times. Although reduced cost could be a deciding factor in whether to offer child care but the university cannot reduce so low that they would not make a profit.
Can some of these teenage moms who are trying to return to school, who have already received a reduce tuition and all these other methods to even be able to afford to return or began school. Will these men or women be able to afford daycare at a rate that the university can make a profit or even break even for providing this service. Another part to this financial woe is can the university afford to pay the workers, establish a facility that meets the Government standard and keep it without going over its already stretched budget. I know what some might say and that it should produce a profit but how long does it take for a new business to produce a profit? The normal for a new business to produce a profit is five to seven years. Is the university prepared to handle this burden until it starts to make a profit? If this is such a profitable business for universities why is that we do not see them in every university across the country. According to the U.S. Department of Education, approximately 1,419 colleges out of over 7000 have daycare programs. This includes four-year universities, junior colleges and technical training schools. Some of these colleges provide the daycare service for free or offer cash grants to help those in financial need.

With this can the university accommodate a large number of children that is bound to rise each year with number of single parents that are attending universities. How will the university give these struggling single parents the discount they need to get an education and take care of their children at the same time? Not everyone will receive a grant or tuition assistance to subsidizing from the Government. Can the colleges accommodate those with special needs children and have the resources to ensure that receive the proper care or will they have to turn away some to ensure they keep their insurance and license to operate. What do these students do when their children are sick and the student has class?

What if a student who is not a single parent requires daycare while attending night classes at the university and has no one to take care of their children? Do the universities accept children from outside of the university students and how does it determine who to accept and who not to accept. Do single male parents get priority or do females get priority or do students with multiple children receive priority. All this can cause serious problems for the school and could cause a major lawsuit and what if they cannot accommodate a child that is handicapped. Many think that children of students should have priority, but which ones those of single or married students. Another area is availability of slots for children because the average age of the student’s children is zero to 24 months and they require special attention and their own childcare provider and special room to accommodate their needs.

This would not be very profitable for school to have to close down the childcare during all these breaks because the workers would leave and then they would have to hire more qualified employees because many of them need their job during breaks and especially in the summer months. This can be a very disappointing time for the workers and the school because childcare will be scarce and money would be tight because of the low number of children at the childcare facility. The university would be losing money during these periods of no school and the childcare workers would not be able to be paid. This is an economical nightmare trying to justify why childcare would be beneficial for universities. If they charge regular prices for tuition and childcare they could very prosperous but if they did that they would not have many single parents at their schools who could afford the education and childcare at the same time.
