Elias Disney, an Irish-Canadian and Flora Call Disney, an German-American were blessed with Walter Elias Disney on December 5, 1901. Walt was born in the windy city of Chicago, Illinois. He had three brothers and one sister. 4He was a medium sized child, not fat yet not extremely bony. He developed into an average man, with brown hair, brown eyes and he always had a moustache.
5Before Walt grew very much his family moved to Marceline, Missouri where he lived out most of his childhood. While he was seven years old he had an interest in drawing and art. He used to draw small sketches and sell them to people in the neighborhood. His uncle, a train engineer got Walt a job selling concessions to people on the trains. 6Walt Disney went to McKinley High School in back in Chicago. He received honorary degrees from Yale, Harvard, University of Southern California, and UCLA.
7When Disney was 16 he applied for the armed services to fight in World War I, but because of his age he wasn’t admitted. Instead he went into the Red Cross. He was send to France and drove an ambulance. Instead of it being covered in camouflage, he drew cartoons all over it.
8On July 13, 1925 Walt Disney married Lillian Bounds, one of his first employees. He had two daughters Diane and Sharon. Diane then married Ron Miller who was a former football star at USC. He was also a Vice President, Executive Producer at the Disney studios. Sharon married William Lund an executive Economics Research Associates, a consulting firm headquartered in Los Angeles. Walt Disney had ten grandchildren, seven through Diane and three through Sharon.

When Walt returned from France he wanted to pursue a career as a commercial cartoonist. He created a company called Laugh-O-Grams and made short animated films for local businesses. In his spare time he was producing The Alice Comedies, a story about a real girl and her adventures in an animated world.
Before Walt was 22, and his story was done his company went bankrupt. Instead of giving up he packed his bags and moved to Hollywood to begin again. There he met up with his brother Roy who helped him out. Together they pooled their money and borrowed 500 more to set up shop in their uncle’s garage. Soon afterwards they received an order for Alice in Cartoonland, which was The Alice Comedies, and they expanded their production operations to a Hollywood real estate office.
Disney produced one of his first silent cartoons called Plane Crazy. Yet before he could release it sound in movies were developed. 9So Walt used Mickey Mouse in the first sound synchronized picture Steamboat Willie. It premiered at the Colony Theater in New York on November 18, 1928. This was his first famous cartoon.
His desire for advancing in the movie industry led him to create Technicolor. He held the patent for this for two years and thus was the only one allowed to make color cartoons. He won his first Academy Award in 1932 for his cartoon Flowers and Trees. On December 21, 1937 Disney released Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It was the first full-length animated film. Its costs added up to 1.5 million dollars, which was an unheard of cost especially during the depression. That was considered one of the great feats of the motion picture industry.
10Walt Disney wasn’t known for any outstanding beliefs in the political field. Linden Johnson gave him an award. 11After Walt Disney moved to Hollywood in 1923, where he considered his primary residence. 12Among the other famous cartoons he made were Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, The Three Caballeros, Mary Poppins, and many many others.
13During his younger years Walt’s family was not that wealthy. He grew up and went bankrupt a few times before he ever got his feet off of the ground. But once he started producing cartoons he became extremely wealthy.

14The major changes in Walt’s life came in 1928 when he wrote his first famous cartoon Steamboat Willie. In 1965 he directed his interest towards a 43 square mile section of land in the center of Florida. He planned to have a completely new Disney World. It was to have an amusement park, motel-resort, industrial complex, an airport, and EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow).
Disney described EPCOT as this: “I don’t believe there is a challenge anywhere in the world that is more important to people everywhere than finding the solutions to the problems of our cities. But where do we begin? Well, we’re convinced we must start with the public need. And the need is not just for curing the old ills of old cities. We think the need is for starting from scratch on virgin land and building a community that will become a prototype for the future (Walt Disney’s Biography, Continued).” The Resort and Magic Kingdom park didn’t open until 1971. EPCOT opened in 1982 and in 1989 MGM studios Theme Park opened.
He had another change in interest when he found California Institution of Arts. It was a college-level professional school of all of the creative and performing arts. Walt said once that if he felt he left behind a place to develop talent then he would think he accomplished something. The Institute was founded then in 1961, with a combination of two schools. One was the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, and the Chouinard Art Institute.
16Walt Disney hobby was what we all knew of him. Even in his young life he would draw. From small sketches to whole scenes painted on the side of a car, or a house. 16In his young life his uncle got him a job selling concessions to passengers on the train, and when he was 16 he drove an ambulance in France for World War I. 17On his side time he drew pictures, and picked up acting and performing. He would entertain his friends at school by impersonating Charlie Chaplin. Sometimes his teacher would request that he entertain the class by telling stories while illustrating them on the board. Even though his father prohibited it he would go out at night and perform comedy at local theaters.

18Walt’s biggest came in 1938. After he had made a fortune off of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Walt bought his parents a home near the studio in Hollywood. Within a month his mother, Flora Disney died from asphyxiation. A broken furnace in the new home caused it. Walt carried this guilt with him until the day he died.
19Walt never had to battle any large illnesses such as cancer or a life threatening disease. 20On December 15, 1966 Walt Disney died from old age. In total he won 950 honors from every nation in the world, 48 Academy Awards, and seven Emmys. But before he died he had created an empire that influenced the entire motion picture industry. His original works are still watched by young people today. The company he created has touched just about every American. His cartoons characters are among the most famous, his toys are sold in McDonalds Kids Meals, his company still produces full length movies, and they have tried to build new amusement parks.
