Working as a nurse assistant many of my patients have never meant anyone from my country or even heard of my country itself. Being the only Somali nursing assistant that works at my hospital the majority of the people and my patients’ ask me questions about my nationality. While the majority actually go out of their way to seek knowledge about what I am and where I am originally from, others just look at me with discomfort and as if they have seen a ghost.
This has brought to my attention that diversity in the workplace is important for employees because it manifests itself in building a great reputation for the company, leading to increased profitability and opportunities for workers. Workplace diversity is important within the organization as well as outside. Business reputations grow when companies demonstrate their commitment to diversity through aggressive outreach and recruiting efforts.
An organization known for its ethics, fair employment practices and appreciation for diverse talent is better able to attract a wider pool of qualified applicants. Other advantages include loyalty from customers who choose to do business only with companies whose business practices are socially responsible. Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organization. It can encompass race, gender, ethnic group, age, personality, background and more.

Not only does diversity involve how people perceive themselves, but how they perceive others, which is in turn can affect their interactions in a work environment that is culturally diverse. Communication, adaptability and change are just some of the issues these companies must deal with. Accepting and appreciating the differences among all people and embracing diversity means the individual strengths and weakness of everyone can be understood and factored into the building of work place teams.
As I learned in the book, recognizing and appreciating cultural differences is only part of the issue. Subordinate groups’ attitudes that have developed over time may cause them to be wary and defensive. Working towards the goal of bridging the gap between dominant and subordinate groups can help facilitate better communication. By stepping out of their comfort levels managers need to develop knowledge of cultural differences and sensitivity to diversity issues.
By establishing relationships at work with individuals different from yourself, you begin to learn about the talent and knowledge the diverse culture can add to your organization. They also need to address prejudice and prejudgment within themselves. Some examples of misconceptions usually based on cultural values, stereotypes and life experiences are that women are less committed to a successful career than men, older employees cannot learn new technology and young workers only care about themselves and their social life.
By challenging these prejudgments, a manager can become a role model for all employees to embrace cultural diversity in the work place. The lefty for a day challenge was just that, a challenge. Keeping my fingers folded around the ball inside the sock while trying to go about my normal activities were all challenging and difficult. It makes me wonder how lefty people feel considering a lot of things in the world were designed for right handed people. The biggest disadvantage is the world in mostly right handed and as such a lot of common devices are optimized for use by the right handed person.

Think about it even common item like scissors and measuring cups are designed for the convenience of the right handed population. There are many disadvantages of not having diversity such as the case of the Jamaican man who got turned down from the job position he qualified for. That company will never know what that man would’ve brought to the company. Among the many advantages of diversity in the work place, having diverse work place means different people from different culture would interact and get to know each other which in result will reduce ignorance and stereotypes of other people.
