Discrimination in the work place is not uncommon and can come in many different forms. Employees can be discriminated against because of their race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, and physical and mental abilities. Although it is illegal to discriminate against another individual because of their individual characteristics some employees are victims of discrimination. An example of workplace discrimination based on religion is not uncommon. There was a young African American woman in her early twenties who was recently hired at an imaging company in a local hospital. During her first few months within the company the young lady wore business casual attire to work every day. One Monday morning she can into the office wearing a head dressing that indicated her religious belief was of the Islamic faith. Several months past and the young lady announced that she was getting married. After her wedding her attire changed from business casual to Muslim over garments which only left the young lady’s eyes exposed.
The hiring manager would make unprofessional remarks in regards to the young lady’s religious beliefs and attire. For example when the young lady would leave the office, comments such as we have ghost in the building, or comments about terrorism 9/11, and the connection with the Islamic faith were made. There were also incidents where the young lady was not allowed to practice her religious beliefs in the work place. The hiring manager would change the employees schedule on a monthly basis and would change the young lady’s lunch period knowing that she utilize her lunch hour to pray every day. Overtime the issue did not go away but became an unhealthy work environment for the young lady as well as other employees who felt that the manager was being basis. The young lady was written up for taking and extended lunch break whereas other employees had the opportunity to combine one fifteen minute and their 30 minute lunch break when production was slow as long as the shift manager approved the change. This had become an issue when it came to the young lady request to combine her morning break with her lunch. Other incidents consisted of denial of time request off and rotation of shifts during the holiday schedule. The work environment for the young lady became very uncomfortable where she had a high call out rate.

This form of unfavorable treatment manifests itself through unwarranted dismissals, harassment, segregation or unequal pay.
