What is it to me where she came from? From her little head to her little feet she is absolutely and entirely divine. Every night of my life I go to see her act and every night she is more marvelous. ” (Wilde: pg 72) He and she are so madly in love with each other that she can only feel it necessary to call him her prince charming. That is until Dorian, Basil, and Lord Henry go to see Sybil’s performance of Romeo and Juliet it is absolutely horrible, and Dorian goes back stage and rips Sybil apart for how bad she as and he realizes that he loved her character not her and she is so distraught that she takes her own life.
You have to blame Dorian because he treated he made her feel so bad that she had to take her own life. Another character’s life that Dorian ruins is that of Basil Hallward. Basil is the artist of the painting of Dorian and the book hints that he has an obsession with Dorian. He begged Dorian to do the sitting so he could paint the picture of him. When he goes to the play to see Sibyl with Dorian and Lord Henry he tries to comfort Dorian when her performance is subpar. He is honestly the only real friend that Dorian had.
When Dorian blames him for the reason of why the painting is demented, he still tries to help Dorian when he found out he sold his soul for eternal beauty saying “Pray, Dorian pray, what is it that one was taught to say in one’s boyhood? ‘Lead us not into temptation. Forgive us our sins. Wash away our iniquities. ’ Let us say that together. The prayer of your pride has been answered. The prayer of your repentance will be answered also. ” (pg. 200) But in the end it didn’t matter because Dorian took Basils live in that room.

He ruined Basils live he treated him like garbage beneath his feet and him then he blames him for the way the painted got distorted and killed him. Out of all the friends lives Dorian ruined, the one he ruined the most has to be that of Alan Campbell. He calls Alan to his house to try to get him to help Dorian hide the body of Basil Hallward. He blackmails him by saying that he has written a letter and he will be forced to send it if he doesn’t help. (pg 429) Alan is forced to help Dorian. “Campbell was gazing into a glistening yellow face. As he was going downstairs he heard the key being turned in the lock. (Pg 438) His last words to Dorian are “I have done what you asked me to do ,and now good-bye let us never see each other again”( pg 438) Later in the book we find out that Alan commits suicide. (pg 534) Probably because of the emotional distress that Dorian put on him by making him cover up the murder of Basil. Dorian is to blame for the suicide of Alan Campbell there is no explanation that holds more ground than that. I do believe that Lord Henry is responsible for the ruined life of Dorian because if he didn’t go on his little rant about how beauty is everything in the garden.
This freaks Dorian out to the point where he says he would sell his soul for eternal beauty. This basically escalades the whole book and brings us on a roller coaster ride to which is Dorian Grey’s life. I believe that Lord Henry, enjoys manipulating people to calm his hedonist feelings, spots Dorian’s vulnerability immediately and plants the seeds of terror in the young man by imposing him his radical, yet catchy theories of life. In the beginning of the book, when he meets Dorian, he tells him “[An influenced person’s] virtues are not real to him. His sins, if there are such things as sins, are borrowed.
He becomes an echo of someone else’s music, an actor of a part that has not been written for him. The aim of life is self-development. To realize one’s nature perfectly – that is what each of us is here for. ” (20) The irony of Lord Henry saying this is that he corrupts Dorian. He tells him this, but Dorian does not pay attention to the warning, and wants to hear more of Lord Henry’s addicting sayings. Henry’s theories act like a slow poison they got into his head, and slowly but surely, they destroyed Dorian. Dorian enters the novel as the image of erfection, is completely under the control of Lord Henry’s speeches by the end of the second chapter. However, before he controls him, he confuses him and leaves him questioning himself and his way of life. The use of Henry’s words keep on corrupting Dorian’s vague morals to the point where he can play around with Dorian’s feelings and make choices for him. It is obvious Dorian became engulfed by he was saying to him. At the end of the book Dorian says to Basil “One day you introduced me to a friend of yours who explained to me the wonder of youth and you finished the portrait of me that revealed to me the wonder of beauty.

As Lord Henry says… Mazlyn Ortiz Pd. 5 In the book The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, “Prince Paradox” according to Dorian or simply Lord Henry mentors and encourages Dorian to live a life devoted to nothing but pleasure. In a mad moment that even now, I don’t know whether I regret or not, I made a wish perhaps you would call it a prayer…”(pg. 198) He basically is say that because of Lord Henry’s explanation of youth it had driven him to sell his soul for eternal beauty. It is all because of Lord Henry’s logic that made Dorian sell his soul and ruin the lives of people he actually cared for. In conclusion there is no way around it Lord Henry Wotton is to blame for the downfall of Dorian Grey’s life and the factor behind him selling his soul.
