Driving while intoxicated or drugged is one of the most hazardous and terrifying part of being any victim behind the steering wheel. I chose the topic of drinking or drugged driving because of the impact it has on so many innocent lives. Just one wrong move can change the lives of you and the others around you even if they’re strangers. I feel as if every human being has the right to live and for a innocent life to be taken away by a careless driver who should not be on the roads is appalling and disgusting. Although there is a law of a legal intoxication of a blood alcohol content of .08%, I believe that if you’re going to drink at all, don’t plan on driving and have a designated driver with you. Any person who illegally takes drugs is already breaking the law but driving after taking them puts every single life in the surrounding cars at risk. Not only can illegal drugs impair your driving ability, but even legal, prescription drugs can make you drowsy and you shouldn’t be driving. Any person who drinks or takes any drugs and plans on driving should always kiss their family goodbye before they go.
First, driving while under the influence of alcohol is a major driving risk. All of the accidents caused by drunk driving are preventable. In car accidents that occur fatalities, the average drunk driver has a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .16 which is two times over the legal limit. Two drinks are equivalent to a BAC of .16. Ever since strict laws have been enforced more over the years, drinking and driving has gone down and accidents from intoxicated drivers has gone down also. From 1982 to 2010, alcohol related car accident fatalities has gone down from 60% of all accidents to 31%. If more laws are strictly enforced, the percentage will continue to go down and innocent victims won’t lose their lives. If in an accident and there is a driver who is illegally intoxicated, there are many consequences, some more strict than others. Some repercussions include getting a DWI (Driving While Under the Influence), suspended or revoked drivers licenses, confiscating or impounding license plates, impounding or immobilizing vehicles, fines or jail for drunk driving, and usually alcohol education. Drinking and Driving is clearly not worth any of the negative outcomes. (website #2)

The group was originally organized in 1980 and has evolved over the past 32 years. The group is all about mothers and parents who have lost their children to drunk driving and do everything they can to prevent more accidents and tragedies for other families. MADD tries to keep people off the road if they’ve been drinking, and also deal personally with families who have lost loved ones to drunk driving. The Mothers Against Drunk Drivings’ mission statement is “To aid the victims of crimes performed by individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to aid the families of such victims and to increase public awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving.” MADD is a great program for innocent victims. If people followed the solutions of route ways home rather than driving drunk, then MADD wouldn’t need to be created in the first place for that many deaths. (website #5)

Last, drugged driving as opposed to drinking while driving. The term drugged driving does not only pertain to what people think. Drugged driving can be driving under the influence of any sort of drug that impairs your ability to drive, whether it’s legal or illegal. Marijuana, the most commonly taken illegal drug among teenagers has a high negative effect.
Marijuana contains a high producing element called THC. THC affects certain areas of the brain that control bodily function movements, balance, coordination, memory, and judgment. Most prescription bottles have labels that the medication can make you drowsy and you should not operate machinery, but people refuse to listen because they do not think it will affect them as bad. Prescription drugs impair your ability to drive just as much as illegal drugs do. If the medication has warning signs of drowsiness and the driver falls asleep behind the wheel, an accident will most likely occur. Mixing driving with any type of drug at all has serious results. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can lead to severe accidents. From the information I found on line about drugs and alcohol associated with driving, it changed my view of the situation more, making myself more aware of what can happen. I always knew not to mix drugs and alcohol with driving, but with all of the stories of drunk drivers who kill innocent people as well as themselves, it is not worth it. I enjoyed researching this information because I knew the basics about driving under the influence, but looking up facts and information about it opened my eyes so much more and made me more positive to keep my word to never drink and drive or especially never do drugs and drive, or never do drugs at all. This information is relevant to myself because I will be driving in less than a year so I need to keep in mind the cautions and right things to do while driving. It is also relevant to my family because I never want to put them through something so tragic as me getting into an accident from being under the influence. I enjoyed writing this paper and any time I have a drink and think about getting behind the wheel, I’ll remember the consequences.
