THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) conducted a drug awareness talk last Aug. 27 at the St. Theresa’s College (STC) auditorium along General Maxillom Avenue in Cebu City. Alan Trani, human resource officer of STC, organized the seminar with PDEA officials Ramon Montenegro and Nicholas Gomez as the resource speakers. Gomez said “milkshake” is the “in thing” among the drug users today. Milkshake is a mixture of Nubain, a regulated drug, and shabu that will be injected by the drug users into their body.“There are already cases of individuals who died from milkshake,” Gomez said.
The “new form of drug” is considered lethal as its users will allegedly experience enhanced alertness and energy for four to five days and loss of appetite. Montenegro cited the lack of personnel as among the reasons why PDEA had difficulty in solving the drug abuse problems. He said the agency only has 999 personnel scattered in 17 regional offices nationwide. Also discussed was the increasing number of drug users every year. In 1999, there were 2,000 drug users reported. The number went up to 2.4 million during the 2002-2004 periods. It reached 6.4 million from 2006 up to the present. Another topic presented was the effect of using prohibited drugs among the youth, composed mostly of college students.
Maria Rizza Labao, an Education student said, “I am disturbed and affected because I have friends who are drug users. And because of that, I have to deal with them. Also I feel not secured because they might do bad things. The seminar is a big impact for me.” Johanna Marie Esguerra, a Mass Communication student and president of the STC College Student Council said: “The significance of the talk was for the students to become aware of the prohibited drugs. At least we now know which drugs are prohibited.”
