Drug Legalization Dear Drug Czar, I understand how busy you are, so I will try to be as brief and precise as possible. My name is Mike and I am 32 now, though I look as a very old and sick man. Out of my thirty-two years I have really lived only sixteen. My life stopped when I was in high school and tried marijuana for the first time. I will never forget that day! It was such an unusual feeling. I felt so exhilarated, so happy and so independent.
How cruel this life is! The very first time you feel really independent you become dependent and will never get free, never in your whole life. It is the vilest joke that life plays on us. And so began the eternal delirium, the intolerable ordeal… Now I have been treated in rehabilitation centers twice. I hope that this second time was the last one. Now I do not use drugs any more, but as a person that has come through all this suffering I want to appeal to you and to your common sense.
I know how powerful you are and I beseech you to influence the government and do everything possible to prevent legalizing easy drugs. Of course, I do not expect that you will sacrifice your huge profits in favor of such miserable drug addicts as I used to be. Believe me, they do not deserve your pity. They should blame only themselves and their lack of will which did not let them say a categorical no at the moment when they were first offered to try drugs, and which turned them into obedient slaves who should suffer all their useless and very short life. I will only try to explain how legalizing easy drugs can influence your business. If easy drugs are legalized you will lose a lot.

First, you will have to pay huge taxes that will make your business hardly viable. If you try to conceal your profits you will be in danger of being prosecuted, because since the business is legalized you will have to play fair. Second, the price on drugs will be controlled by the government and, of course, not in your favor. You will become totally dependent on the officials and their often changeable moods. You will have to spend huge sums of money to support the election campaigns of the candidates who will gladly lobby your interests in the Congress and donate not less to various rehabilitation centers and Drug Treatment Courts. Third, the police will constantly keep an eye on you and will not cease their investigation, which I am sure they are conducting now.
When your business is legalized, it will be much easier for them to gather enough necessary evidence about your previous dirty deals to send you to jail. Even if you hire the best accountants who will skillfully maneuver with your profits you will not be able to conceal your illegal sources of income which I am sure you will always have. So, as you see it is much safer for you to stay in the shadow. But do not think that I write this letter because I care for you and your business. My motivation is absolutely opposite. My intention is to stop or at least to handle the growth of drug addicts.
Legalization of easy drugs proved to be useless in achieving this aim. Moreover, it proved to be more harmful than the experts had expected. For example, when marijuana was legalized in Holland its use did not drop, but the use of such heavy drugs as cocaine and heroine increased drastically. That is why I am an inveterate opponent of drug legalization and prefer to fight with drug addiction with the help of the DEAs efficient and balanced approach of prevention, enforcement and treatment. I am ready to spend the rest of my life telling people and especially kids what drugs can do to a person, and beseeching them not to repeat my mistake and spoil their life forever. Now that you have heard my arguments and my story I hope you will make the right decision and will not let drug legalization come into effect. Thank you for your time.
