Their interest and hobbies will fade and they spend excessive time on one activity”. Boesky, Lisa, (2007) As parent we have to be open and understanding to our children let know that being confident in oneself helps them to overcome peer pressure. Peer pressure is a big factor for the use of drugs in the youths today. Also music and the movies and different television shows. As a youth growing up in this day of age with the music videos and friend’s youths are subject to the pressure of trying to fit in. So the causes of that sometimes end up in the trying of drugs to feel accepted. We all go under the pressure as teen to fit in with the cool kids like the cheerleader or jocks but for some it might be that guy or girl who has it all. Teens try to fit and want to be known to be part of that social circle that involves the cool kids and sometime it leads to the use of drugs to fit in with these kids.

I was becoming the guy who could smoke and drink and was becoming well known. Doing the drugs and drinking built my reputation and I started to become popular. Or at least that’s what I thought then” (Keegan, Kyle pg. 18-27).
Keegan words show how fast are youths can be affected by the use of drugs. I was just like how Keegan was when I was young teen I smoked and drank liquor, and also skipped out on classes to go smoke weed. My grades started to drop because my attendance was bad and I missed a lot of work.

I paid him off in due time and decide that hustling was not my forte. I started to wean myself off little by little.
Then the end of the school year came around and was left to repeat some of my classes. It was then I decide to take back my life and get back to my books if I wanted to graduate from high school. I decide to talk to my parent about what was going on in my life as a teen they said that they knew something was wrong but felt if they pressured me I would shut them out and rebel more and they were right but there talking with me and giving me space to breed. The research, published in a recent issue of the American Journal of Public Health, focused on programs designed to reduce the risk for substance misuse. The research is part of a partnership between Iowa State and Penn State known as PROSPER — Promoting School-Community-University Partnerships to Enhance Resilience. PROSPER administers scientifically proven prevention programs in a community-based setting with the help of the extension systems in land grant universities. An important reason that the PROSPER programs are effective in reducing early substance use and conduct problems is that they are carefully timed to fit the needs of early adolescents and their parents, said Mark T. Greenberg, holder of the Bennett Endowed Chair in Prevention Research.

As a result they are more comfortable with refusing to do something that might lead to trouble or doing things that they will later regret. We also support parents to be more aware of how to communicate with their teens, and to be more attuned to what their children are doing, who they’re with, where they’re going so that they can effectively monitor, supervise and communicate with their children,” said Greenberg. The ongoing community partnerships are evidence of the PROSPER program’s sustainability, according to the researchers. The results extend beyond a reduction in prescription drug or marijuana use. Researchers know that substance abuse often leads to other problem behaviors, so prevention can have a ripple effect and cut down on problems in school and violent behaviors in general. The benefits are measured in economic terms as well as the overall health and outlook of the community. State, P. (2013, June 6) This program is a good example of some of the ways to help our youth, and be more involved in their lives to prevent the drug abuse. As the times change we as parents and a community must work together and secure a future for our youths. This is my take on how drug abuse among the youth is important to help keep our kids on the right path to be successful in life. So with the help from the community, parents, and government programs we can achieve a drug free environment for the youths of the future.
