Drugs and Alcohol in the Untied State prison system In the Untied States most of the prison population are people that have been involved with Alcohol or some form of drugs. Many of them were high or drunk at the time of there arrest. Most of them only did the crimes to be able to support there drug and alcohol addiction. There were not thinking of the consciences of there actions at the time. In most cases Alcohol play more of a role in the violent crimes then people on drugs. Alcohol has played a role in most of the rapes, murder and thefts then any other drug. Alcohol has been at the center of things since the early 1900’s when it was banned in the Untied States. Many people fought to be able to drink alcohol and the ban was lifted.
Since 1980 the prison population amoung Drug and Alcohol abusers as grown nearly 239 persent. There are 840,000 federal and state prisoners that need some kind of drug program. Fewer then 150,000 have gotten any drug treatment before they were released from prison. Because of this an alarming rate of prisoners released are arrested again for some kind of drug or alcohol relate crime and returned to prison. jud On the news we hear almost everyday about another drug bust or someone going back to prison for a drug related crime. Yet we don’t seem to be able to come up with a solution.
for this problem. In prison there are more Drugs and Alcohol then there are on the streets. It seems to me that we need to look at the problem and find a better solution on dealing with it. The way that the courts are dealing with this issue now does not seem to be working. If there are more Drugs and Alcohol in the prison system then on the outside why are we not doing somthing about it. Prisoners have the right to treatment as does everyone else. But yet they are treated like outcast because they have been in trouble with the law.
