In the short story “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin, the protagonist of the story, Laurie Mallard is freed from the imprisonment of her marriage. Laurie is imprisoned in three ways, first by her marriage to Brently, who seems to have a terrible relationship with her. Then by her heart trouble, which is caused by her marriage. Lastly she is imprisoned inside her home as a housewife. Due to her husband’s death, Laurie has freedom, from her marriage, her heart trouble, and the restriction to her house. Marriage is a major part of this story, between Laurie and Brently, that causes her imprisonment. After learning that her husband died, Laurie, did not take the news like other women would. She started to cry in her sister’s arms, and then went to her room alone to grieve (Chopin, 1).
The story takes place around 1894, during this time men look for Women who are “young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength” and that is exactly what Laurie was, but in the relationships the man was the one in command (Chopin, 1).
Brently seemed to be a harsh, or maybe even abusive leader, which leads to why Laurie would have heart problems. Laurie has a bad heart, mainly because of her problems. Brently had died, leaving Laurie by alone and free, but before that he had done things that ruined Laurie’s heart. When the story began the reader learned that Laurie had heart trouble, but she did not get heart trouble from a normal cause, instead Brently hurt her in a way to give her the heart trauma. Although the story does not tell you anything before Brently’s ‘death’, it gives clues to the freedom that was coming for her, a freedom from Brently, that was creeping out of the sky (Chopin, 1).
The Essay on Weak Heart Story Louise Life
Did joy kill her? Yesterday I read one of Kate Chopin! s stories, ! ^0 The Story of An Hour. ! +/- This story told us about a woman named Louise Mallard who had heart problems. One day Louise heard her husband was killed in a train accident. She was sad at the beginning. After a short while, she begins to think about a new life. All the sadness and hopelessness turned to happiness and joy. She was ...
At first she was depressed by her husband’s ‘death’, but after that she wanted to live longer and have time by herself (Chopin, 2).
A housewife rarely ever leaves her house, especially in the 1800s, and that is no exception for Laurie. Laurie is kept at home waiting for Brently, maybe making dinner or washing clothes.
Also, she has “a comfortable, roomy armchair” that she sits in doing nothing, but watches the sky, she does not work or talk to other people, she justs stays there waiting for Brently day after day. Even though she is married to Brently, she does not always love him. Then the day that he ‘dies’ she was not waiting for him anymore, but he came back when she did not expect him, killing her. When Brently comes back, Josephine, Laurie’s sister, screams, Richards, a friend of Brently that comes to help tell Laurie the news, tries to hide Brently from his wife, and Laurie dies. This story is titled “The Story of An Hour” because Laurie had a taste of a new life of freedom, and that lasted only an hour, and she lived for only an hour that way and could not go back to her husband’s will so she died. Freedom has a price to pay, and irony works in bizarre ways. Laurie ‘paid’ for freedom with her life, that her sister and Richards tried so hard to save.
