‘The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, both uses symbols to tell stories. In “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson used names to stress the theme of the story but in “Young Goodman Brown” Hawthorne uses name to in rich the theme of the stories. Both stories use symbols to show a parallel of good and evil.

The authors in both stories “Young Goodman Brown” and “The Lottery” used symbolism to show different in the setting and emotions about their stories. If you are reading these stories in the literal view you my become confusing to you but, if taken the way it was writing you will understand it better. “Young Goodman Brown” By Hawthorne and “The Lottery” by Jackson both show many different elements of symbolism. In these two stories the authors make you think long and hard to draw a conclusion of these two stories. In “The Lottery” Jackson used names as symbols but “Young Goodman Brown” by Hawthorne used multiples names as symbols. Both stories use other things as symbols such as objects and action to tell stories. In “The Lottery” introduction you to more evil than! “Young Goodman Brown” will show you both evil and good throughout the story. In “Young Goodman Brown” the use of Goodman Brown wife name is a symbol “Faith” is a symbol of pure and good. But when you look at “The Lottery” Mr. Graves is the obvious symbol because the first thing you think of is death. Also you could pit Mr. Summer as a symbol because you would think he was likeable man. When you at “Young Goodman Brown” show one of the major symbolisms of the staff (which means cane) is talk about so many times in the story (265).

The pink ribbon is symbol of all things pure and good. But when Brown faith was tested he gave into to the devil. In both of these stories there is good and evil but in “The Lottery” you will see more evil than good. Both authors use symbols in their stories. The symbols help get the point across to the readers. “The Lottery” the black box is the biggest symbol. However in “Young Goodman Brown” the staff and the pink ribbon are big symbols in the stories.
