Each persons writing expresses his/her personality. It is the primary basis upon which others judge our work, what we know and what we are willing to say on a certain issue. It illustrates our thinking to other people. The good thing about writing is that it is portable to any place and one can pass on his/her ideas through time and distances. Writing can help keeping track of earlier ideas and gives an opportunity of coming back to previous times. Also, through writing other people can give their feedback on what one is saying.
Being a non-native English speaker and coming from Cuba I have experienced several problems with writing. Once, not long since I came to the US and started looking for a job, I have failed a job interview, part of which was writing a note. Even though otherwise I was qualified for the position, I got rejected because of my very poor spelling at the time. This was the time when I realized how important good writing skills are. As a Licensed Practical Nurse I will have to write numerous reports, notes, etc., so saying things in an educated, clear and precise way is crucial. Now I really pay much attention to my writing.
I am always proofreading, spell-checking, looking for stylistic and grammatical mistakes. I am trying to read my own writing as if I was another person and had no idea what the writer had to say. I am asking myself whether I organized my thoughts, ideas, points in a well-formatted and clear for other readers manner. Also, I am trying to write in a way, which will make me proud of myself in the future..
