Edgar Allen Poe
There was a substantial amount of death in Poe’s life. That is one of the specific reasons why he included a lot of gothic literature and death in his writings. Maybe he had a fascination with the thought of death. A tragic thing for someone to experience but maybe Poe not only wrote about it but questioned it as well. What happens when you die? Where do you go? All these questions that could of been running through Poe’s head. This is why he ended up writing the way he did. Life tragedies were too immense for Poe to comprehend and therefore only being able to express himself through his writing.
Poe dealt with many hardships in his life, some of which many of us have never experienced ourselves. Many happen in the early years of his young life; He never was old enough to understand who his parents were, let alone have a conversation with either of them. He lost his mother from Tuberculosis and his father ran off. Being separated from his sister at a young age and being brought up by couple he wasn’t familiar with didn’t seem strike his fancy either. He was brought up in a fairly wealthy manner and was later moved from Richmond to England, there he received some of the best schooling available and soon he returned to Virginia to attend College, in which Mr. Allen paid for. Poe and Mr. Allen never had a connecting relationship; Mr. Allen was a very appropriate and well-mannered man who watched his mistakes. Poe on the other hand wasn’t, as Mr. Allen wanted him to be, a figure of himself. Soon Poe was gambling and drinking while attending the University of Virginia, and when his stepfather found out about a letter written insulting him he stopped paying his tuition and set him to work a lowly job. He moved to Boston where he published a collection of poems, desperate he joined the military and pleaded with his stepfather to pay his way out, so Mr.

As you can tell Poe lead a depressing life with some enlightening points but more than often it was a hard life. A man with no way to support himself, he did what he did best, and stuck to it, he wrote, and he wrote well. It was only appropriate that Poe wrote the way he did but anyone with the life that he had would be some what influenced by the way life was, the way life was going, and the way life was going to be. Traumatized by life he wrote grotesquely and in elaborate detail about death, in it the was what we now called gothic literature. Wording an opinion for Poe’s short story The Tell-Tale Heart is difficult due to so many facts. One such fact is that Poe didn’t get along with his adoptive father, which results that he might be referring to the old man that was killed in The Tell-Tale Heart. In the end of the story the beating of the heart was tearing him up inside which can conclude the way he and his adoptive father contained their relationship. When the man killed the old man he felt a sigh of relief. When Poe would leave to go to schools, or when he joined the military he found that relief because he was away from his adoptive father. When he heard the heart beating he went crazy and confessed, which can relate to the way he would gamble and go on drinking binges and his father would bail him out of his situations. Almost like he would confess and run back to “daddy” for help.
