Education and religion are both powerful and influential forces in society. Both institutions consist of values, beliefs, and knowledge that are essential to the social reproduction of individuals and entire cultures. They both have issues of societal stability and social change trying to reflect society as they attempt to shape it. Both – education and religion – are socializing institutions. Where as early socialization takes place within our families and friendships; education and religion become the more formalized and specific versions of sociology as we get older.
Both of these things can bring different people with different views together and create a very influential part of society. This way, real information is getting passed to people the right way, rather than through lies and rumors. This creates a number of doors being opened and ideas being shared. I grew up in the church as a Christian, but not everyone believes in God. On a dollar bill, it says “In God we trust” but not everyone believes that. That obviously is a big one where religion isn’t separated from the rest of society.
I believe that we should keep that on the dollar bill because it is the only truth, and proven to be the only truth, but some people would disagree. I think another very blurred line is Christmas. People still celebrate Christmas that don’t believe that Jesus was the son of God. They don’t even know that it was Jesus’ birthday. Why would someone celebrate something that they don’t believe in? That doesn’t make much sense to me. People shouldn’t go out and buy gifts and celebrate a holiday just for fun, if they don’t believe in the true meaning. It is sort of insulting to Christians and other people that believe in God. It think, over all, it is everyone’s choice what they believe and it should be left up to the individual person.
