The movie and book, Soul Surfer, both describe the story of Bethany Hamilton when she was attacked by a shark. Unfortunately, she lost her arm, but she never gave up on her dream of becoming a pro surfer. Although the book and movie both describe the traumatic experience Hamilton went through, they differ in some ways.
For the most part, the book and movie were very similar. Both were very descriptive of the attack and everything that Bethany went through. Both express how strong and important Bethany’s faith in God is to her, as well as how it helped her think positively and encouraged her to not give up. In addition, they mention Alana as her childhood best friend and how close they have always been. Overall, both acknowledge all the hard training Bethany performed, which led her to becoming a pro surfer.
On the other hand, not everything in the movie and the book were exactly the same. In the movie, Bethany and Alana had to sneak out to go night surfing. However, in the book, it never mentioned them sneaking out, yet they still went night surfing. In the book, Bethany was thirteen when she got attacked, but in the movie, she is said to be fifteen. Also, Malina was a rival in the movie, and Bethany didn’t have much of a friendship with her, yet in the book, they were friends; they even went surfing together sometimes.
The book and the movie were not exactly the same and may have differed, but they were based on the same story. Furthermore, there were many more similarities than differences, but both described the experience that Bethany went through.
