Henry Truong Mr. Wilk English 2 10 May 2013 Hidden Dangers Before 13 “Because never in my entire childhood did I feel like a child. I felt like a person all along—the same person that I am today. ” (Card xvii) In Orson Scott Card’s novel, Ender’s Game, Ender Wiggin, a little 6 year old boy, is recruited into Battle School by Colonel Graff and the International Fleet to save mankind from an alien species called the Buggers. The Buggers have been humankind’s main enemy and they know very little of the Buggers beside that they are the bad guy.
There has already been two fights between human’s and buggers. During both encounters, the humans barely survived, and they now must prepare for the third fight. Ender’s Game is a journey of little Ender Wiggin, who was always being bullied for being a “third”, and how everything changed when he got recruited at the age of six to train in order save the world. Although the children in this book are trained and built to be saviors of Earth, on the other hand are treated as children and kept in the dark. …he [Card] examines why referring to characters as ‘children’ does not necessarily make them well-rendered child characters. ” (Kelly 112) In David J. Kelly’s critical essay, he starts off be stating that, and he continues to explain some of the characters who are referred to as children but are not really “children”. We may see kids Truong 2 as innocent and not know any better, but Card believes that behind that little innocent face could be earth’s savior or doom.
The Essay on Investigation and prevention of child abuse
Child abuse is one of the most common human right violations in the human community. According to UNCEF reports, at least one child dies every day as a result of child abuse. Nevertheless, the exact number of child deaths as a result of chilled abuse is hindered by the fact that most cases of child deaths in the communities goes without investigation. Still, an estimated over 30, 000 child in ...
For example ,Ender is one of those kids, “…in physical struggles he lashes out with a fear-driven response that he has no power over, a cyclone so violent that he does not even see the results…” (Kelly 114) Like the kid version of the hulk, losing control when he gets bullied, and not knowing what he has doing until he gains back conscious of his own self. He doesn’t want to hurt others, but he ends up doing it anyways. In the next essay by, Tim Blackmore, he talks about the, “…military paradigm Ender must operate to survive. (115) As you may know, Charles Darwin’s natural selection where you must adapt to survive, as Ender faces Battle School, he greatly changes but also psychologically breaks down and becomes the world’s most greatest general at the age of 12 and earth’s savior against the Buggers. Tim Blackmore also explains how, “Card forces the reader to move between two viewpoints: that of the suspicious, manipulated child and that of the paranoid, utilitarian machine worker. (116) Card’s unique point-of-view of the characters in the book, makes us see kids differently, “Card endows each of the three Wiggin children with a particular strength: Peter is a conqueror, another Alexander; Valentine is an Empath; and Ender is a warrior… ”(Blackmore 118) I believe children’s have hidden potential, maybe not like Ender to fight and strategize, but things we do not usually expect in kids. Ender differs from all the other kids in the beginning . In this society there is a limit two kid per family.
The government has Ender’s parent to have a third child, Ender. Since having a third child in this society is so different, Ender had been bullied during his time in regular school. He becomes constantly bullied for being a “third” as they call it. Truong 3 As a result of being bullied, he lashes out and beats the crap out of the bully Stilson. By that I mean he knocks him out with one hit and Stilson falls to the ground but then he starts kicking him again in his spine and then the crotch, setting an example to everybody else not to mess with him. Knocking him down won the first fight. I wanted to win all the next ones, too. So they’d leave me alone. ” (Card 19) This really surprised me. His philosophy of knocking him down only won the first battle, and to end all of the future battles, he continues to beat up Stilson to scare off all the other bullies. This is what happens at school, at home it gets much worse for little Ender. He gets beat up and threatened by his older brother Peter. When the parents are out and the kids are home, Ender becomes most vulnerable to Peter.
The Essay on Bean And Ender School Battle Similarities
The Parallels and Distinctions of Bean and Ender Bean and Ender have many similarities that set them apart from their peers in times of peril. Their intelligence made them the most promising weapon in the war against the buggers, rating highest among the smartest children in the world. This is surprising on account of the dissimilarities of their lifestyles before they went to battle school. ...
They both play games together, but it get out of hand real quick. Peter comes from behind and hits him on the head causing him to fall, and with that he shoves his foot in Ender’s calling him a bugger spy and then threatens to kill him and dissect him. Luckily for Ender he had Valentine as his guardian angel, talking Peter out of his violent attacks. Peter is just a psychopath who enjoys other suffering, while Ender just keeps quite. I do not know why he does not fight back, but I believe that he does not want to hurt his family.
Ender is a unique character for using his wits to help him fight for his lack of strength and size at the age of six, . You do not see this everyday at the playground during recess do you? Or when you leave your kids at home, you did not expect them to threaten and actually attempt to kill each other do you? Just because they are children does not make them “children”. Life is about to kill or be killed, and at Battle School there is something called the, “Battle Room”. The battle room is zero gravity room where teams fight each other with Truong 4 tun guns, and if you get shot with one you are temporarily paralyzed in a certain area depending on where you got shot. Two teams fight until one team gets to the other side with four of their team members to open the gate by touching panels on each corner’s of the gate. When Ender arrives to Battle School, the Battle Room turns into a room that, “…destroys individuality while it creates a unitary killing machine. ” (Blackmore 117) While being the one of the youngest there, he quickly outranks many people and becomes the best and everyone fears him.
There was a point where Ender had to go against 2 teams, and Ender won although he was clearly outnumbered. As the days pass by, the school slowly breaks into Ender’s mind driving him crazy. He’s constantly “playing” against other teams day and night, with him and his army tired and weak to the point where they barely have any sleep. The worst part of it all is when Ender leads one team to victory; he is re-assigned into a different team, having to fight his fellow comrade. Ender quickly breaks down to the point where he pushes everyone away from him, knowing how he has to face his friend one day.

The Colonel and the school’s method of training Ender, is to beat him to the point of death, only to bring him back to life only to beat him again. Ender was able to keep his sanity though and survive the torture, but as a result turned into something else. From a little boy, grew Earth’s last defense…a 12 year old boy. I would not have thought my life would be in the hands of a 12 year old boy, would you? After Battle School and a break, he then was shipped to a space center. There he played on simulators with other of his Battle School friends and oes going through the simulations of fighting buggers. Each day doing simulations that get harder each day. Truong 5 Although Ender does not enjoy doing it he has to. His teacher, Rackham, tells him he must not quit and he must be prepared for later on. Day and day after day of hours of training, he comes to his final examination. His final exam is a simulation where he’s in a position where he is greatly outnumbered. Many people would believe that defeating the simulation is impossible, but Ender wants to end it all and becomes determined to defeat the simulation.
With that, he miraculously pulled it off and beat the simulator. As he won, all the adults around him were cheering and celebrated. Ender was puzzled not sure what was going on, found out that al the simulators were actual real fleets, and he actually just destroyed the alien race. Ender became furious that they just used him like that. Being kicked to the shadows like a kid, being lied to and used by the adult. Thinking it was all a game, Ender actually eliminated an alien race.
Graff responds to Ender’s anger with, “Individual human beings are all tools, that the others use to help us all survive. ” (Blackmore 116) Training little kids to become elites of the future to help protect earth, and yet they keep them in the shadows, lying to them and using them as weapons rather than human beings. No wonder Ender’s furious at Graff, being used like that, I would be too. This book Ender’s game reminds me of “Lord Of The Flies” and all the little kids who change from little elementary students, into savages.
The Essay on Changing a Five Day School Week to a Four Day School Week
Changing a five day week to a five day week to a four day week (For schools) Why is our traditional five day week changing to a four day week? Any reason? Only difference was they turned into savages due to their circumstance, being isolated on an island and all. While in Ender’s game they were trained to become savages. When we think of kids we think of games and recess, but Orson Scott Card believes that just because they look like a kid does not mean they will act like one. Like Truong 6 the saying, “Do not judge a book by its cover. ” Through out this process I learned to expect the unexpected, because I can not automatically assume things from appearances, but from by how they behave and act.
Society makes it that when we see a little kid, we automatically view them as little and innocent. Card however sees things differently, what seems to be a little kid could actually be an evil genius in disguise. As a critical reader, I will focus a lot more on why the author made the character the way he/she is, and how that character develops through out the novel. Work Cited Card, Orson Scott Ender’s Game.
