In the novel ‘The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender’, Day introduces the protagonist of the novel, Claudia Valentine. Throughout the novel we learn that Valentine acquires two Distinctive voices, a public and a private voice. She is seen as a female version of a traditional 40’s tough talking detective that expresses a formal voice towards the people she meets due to her job. This public voice that we are shown through her profession shows her commitment and her passion for her job. Within the novel Mrs. O’Toole asks Claudia if she would like to stay for a cup of tea, Valentine then replies saying ‘No, perhaps some other time. Thank you, goodbye.’ Through the use of her Stream of consciousness we are shown her Public voice and her professionalism towards the people she interviews, Valentine knows how to complete her job properly. Although later on in the novel when the character Steve Angell is introduced we learn of a different side of Claudia Valentine, a more privatized voice. Her feelings and thoughts are widely portrayed by Day whilst Valentine is with Angell. Through the idiom used when Valentine states ‘I didn’t feel like going home and licking my wounds alone.’ This demonstrates to the reader that she feels very comfortable with Steve Angell and does not feel the need to not be her true self even when she is not in the best of states. During the novel we are exposed to the two Distinctive voices of Claudia Valentine that form the text into the thrilling detective genre fiction it is and that shows her views on the aspects of society.

Harry Lavender is another important character in the novel who is known as the Villain. Day demonstrates through the novel the different Distinctive voices that Lavender possesses. Technology is a theme well displayed within the novel and is also a great aspect of Lavender’s life and Crimes. Without the technology he would not be able to commit the crimes he does and also would not have been able to obtain the power he had. In one of his own monologues and the extended metaphor he states ‘I have extracted more gold from the electronic revolution than from euphoric flowers of Asia’ this statement really shows Lavender’s need for technology and also how much of a part it has played in his life. Also through the portrayal of Harry Lavenders distinctive voice the audience learns of his great amount of control over the city. Without the control Lavender maintains over the city his unique voice would not be as strong. Through the use of emotive language when Lavender says ‘I stand on top of my city and see the shape of the future’ this clearly shows him placing himself in a controlling role and shows his confident and powerful tone towards his city. These aspects of Lavender’s life and crimes help shape his personal voice, interest the reader and also show his power over the society he live within.
