Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in 1899 in Oak Park, Ill. As a boy he was taught by his father to fish and hunt along the shores and in the forests surrounding Lake Michigan. He graduated from high school in 1917 and became a reporter for the Kansas City Star, (web) but soon left to become an ambulance driver in WWI. He then served for many different newspapers in many cities as a reporter. Even though he wasn’t a soldier he served in many battles and had many close encounters with death. Hemingway’s writings and his personal life made a big influence on American writers to come.
Many of his works are considered classics of American literature, and even made into motion pictures. His earliest works include the collections of short stories Three Stories and Ten Poems in 1923. The Sun also Rises, a story of a group of morally irresponsible Americans and Britains living in France and Spain, was the novel that established Hemingway’s reputation in 1926. Hemingway’s second important novel A Farewell to Arms (1929) was a deeply moving love story of an affair between an American officer and a British nurse. In 1952 Hemingway published The Old Man and the Sea, a powerful novelette about an aged Cuban fisherman, for which he won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize. He was soon awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954.
Most of the crucial events in his life took place between WWI and WWII, “The Lost Generation.” (web) Hemingway married all together four times and was a father to three children.
