Essay Comparing The “Lone Bather” And “The Swimmer” Peoms
Poetry is known as the highest form of the English language. Just like a picture says a thousand words, a poem speaks volumes. It sings about the very essence of the human soul. It reveals the emotions that guide us. The two poems “The Lone Bather” by A.M. Klein and “The Swimmer” by Irving Layton are both very similar and also different in messages that they convey and this is displayed by the aspects of character design, meaning and locational design. Thus, they explore the reason for the differences in human perspective: the individuality of the human soul.
The main characters in both “The Lone Bather” and “The Swimmer” are the two male swimmers. The male element meets the female element, water. The “Lone Bather” is a rather sad poem that captures the feeling of hopelessness of the poet. “and then comes up to float until he thinks/the ceiling at his brow, and nowhere any sides.” Here Klein’s bather expresses his uneasiness. Just some time ago he seemed to feel at home in the water. He trusted it and then all of a sudden he felt threatened. Irving Layton in “The Swimmer” on the other hand maintains complete control of the water and his surroundings. He never feels threatened or trapped. Rather he shows control. “The snake heads strike/ Quickly and are silent.” He commands respect from the fickle medium of water that is lunging to attack the intrusion. And his presence is allowed and accepted by his forcefulness. He even goes far enough to say that he feels at home in the water. “In the scentless greenery that leads him home,”. A.M Klein lets his lone bather to be controlled by the water. The element of water plays with him like a new toy, a foreign element that has entered into its vast and unknown world. He says, “he slides his belly over/ the melon rinds of water…”. The bather enters the mysterious in the mercy of the water medium. He is yielding and trusting. His only concern is to be accepted in this cold and lonely place. Whereas the swimmer in Irving Layton’s poem is only interested in conquering the ocean of uncertainty that he has entered. Te lone bather loses hismale form,”…lets go his manshape..” because he does not believe in the necessity of aggression in creation. The lne bather belives that it is necessary for the meeting of pure male and female element. The characters that the respected poets have created for their poems are a true representation of themselves.
The Term Paper on Critical Appreciation Of The Poem ‘Ode To The West Wind‘
“Thunder is good; thunder is impressive. But it is lightening that does the work.” The poem ‘’Ode to the West Wind’’ was written in the autumn of 1819, in the beautiful Cascine Gardens outside Florence and was published with ‘‘Prometheus Unbound’’ in 1820. The poet is himself in a mood of despondency and misery and says that he falls upon the thorns of life and is bleeding. He is seeking ...
The true meaning of the two poems is the same. The writers are both describing the process of creation of something new and unique. They both talk about ingenuity and creativity. But they have different perspectives to how the rest of the word accepts this burst of creation. In the poem “The Lone Bather”, A.M. Klein describes this process as a very lonely process that only the creator understands. Only the creator sees the soul of conception. The world looks upon it with a frown, not understanding something that is different. He says, ” …and the towel/which rubs the bird, the plant, the dolphin back again…”. This line from the poem describes the fact that the author has to leave behind his feelings and his inventive ideas when he is entering the real world again. He believes that the world is a cold place that will not accept or understand his ideas. “…a street sound throws like a stone, with paper, through the glass”. The glass is his fragile mind and the paper represents intelligence. The stone, an innate object without any intelligence, represents the world. He shows that even though the paper, intelligence, is wrapped around the stone, the world, the glass still shatters.
The Term Paper on World And Ideas Of Karl Marx
The World and Ideas of Karl Marx The latter part of the nineteenth century was teeming with evolved social and economical ideas. These views of the social structure of urban society came about through the development of ideals taken from past revolutions and the present clash of individuals and organized assemblies. As the Industrial Revolution steamed ahead paving the way for growing commerce, so ...
He shows that intelligence is of no use to survive in his time. The poem “The Swimmer” is a very different approach to the process. Mr. Layton has a more optimistic approach to the process of conception of a fresh idea. He believes that some sort of aggression and force must be used to make the world accept his teachings. His idea of creation is the violent meeting of a male and female element. It is the sexual instinct that gives birth to aggression. He is not afraid of failure like Mr. Klein is. He knows that he will succeed. “And the last wave romping in/ To throw its boyhood on the marble sand.” His last lines are a conclusion that he has accepted himself. And so has the water. The poem conveys the message that you have to accept your fate and deal with the realities of the situation.
The locational design of the poems have similarities in the time and the space of the two poems. The poems are focusing on the female element of water. They both occur in the unpredictable medium. Both the poems are referring to the interaction of the persons and the water as the creative process itself. The setting of the two poems is also very different. The lone bather is in a swimming pool. This is a very tame and safe surrounding. The person in this poem does not take any risks. There is nothing dangerous about still waters. He is in a setting that is easily predictable. The swimmer on the other hand, is in a setting that is very wild and unpredictable. It is a setting where challenges and obstacles are prevalent. He realizes that it is not easy making the world accept his ideas. He realizes that the world is a harsh place. The lone bather just hopes that the world will learn his ideas. The poems both occur in the same time frame, the afternoon. This is an odd time for something as violent as the creative process. The afternoon is usually a time when life for most slows down. People relax and take naps. It is not a time of an immense expenditure of energy for the production of a new idea. Thus the poets enforce the unpredictability of the creative mind.
The Essay on The Poem The World Corrodes
Eons pass and the worlds corrode...As time pass the story unfolds...For mistakes are made and lies are told...But in the end what matter holds...The hard work and suffering called fool's gold...Or yet the true happiness the one I yet not hold...Eons pass and the worlds corrode...As time pass the story unfolds...For mistakes are made and lies are told...But in the end what matter holds...The hard ...
The two poems are real works of art that are very similiar and yet very different forms of art. The poets have some very different perspectives to how they view their lives and the world around them. Their poems are a reflection of the different perspective of how they see the mind of an artist.
