The term Democracy is derived from two Greek words, demos, meaning people, and kratos, meaning rule. These two words form the word democracy which means rule by the people. The two major types of democracy are representative democracy and Direct Democracy. Clearly the arguments for and against each form of democracy are plentiful. Due to problems with in the direct democratic system, its use as a practical form of government is not even thinkable. Therefore, in order for any form of democracy to function, Representative Democracy is the superior form of political rule in the United States.. direct democracy (sometimes knows at pure democracy) is where the people decide government initiatives directly.
In contrast, a representative democracy (or indirect democracy) involves elected officials representing a group of people. In a representative democracy elected officials make government decisions on the behalf of the people they represent. In comparison, a direct democracy everyone has an individual voice on what they think the government should be doing. In a direct democracy people often feel like they actually have an influence on how the government in run. Sometimes in a representative democracy, people often feel as though their voices aren’t being conveyed in government by their representative. Some believe a direct democracy is preferable to a representative democracy because they know their voice is being conveyed in the the way they want and not being corrupted by what some call misleading politicians. Some fear that in a direct democracy some highly radical people can put forth unreasonable policies or ideas that then gain support by easily persuaded americans.
