Essay On: “A Prayer For Owen Meany ” Bogie F oden/6/16/05/ English In the novel “A Prayer For Owen Meany,” John Irving creates the character of Owen as a foil to John, the protagonist. Owen Meany embodies the qualities of a true leader while John grows more like his father: doubtful and lost. In the beginning of the novel, immediately there is a clear difference between Owen and Johnny. There is the field of academics; Owen is the head of his class while he helps John not to fail in his studies.
There is Owen, very sure of his belief system and Johnny, very doubtful and unsure about his beliefs or feelings towards’ god. Throughout the novel, John has a constant hero worship of Owen. An example of this is when Owen begins to lead the rector and his wife in the production of the pageant of ’53: ” Thus did Owen get his way, again; “On the hay” was where he would lie… .” This excerpt shows Johnny in awe of his friend.
The way Owen takes charge of the situation and creates the pageant the exact way he wants it. This also identifies another theme in the book, the theme of purpose. Owen has a new sense of purpose now that his parents have told him that his was a virgin birth; he is as close to a lord Jesus as anyone in history. Then there is John, who ends up being Joseph out of the fact that Owen prescribed him the part. So, outlined for us is Owens advantage over Johnny in the sense that Owen has a purpose that is very clear to him. Then, there is Johnny who can do nothing but follow his friend from class to class, major to major into college.
The Essay on Historical Intro Of The Challenge To Social Classes
The historical introduction of the Challenge to Social Classes A journey through the twentieth century in America via the trials and tribulations as offered by American novelists depicts a common social evolution. Struggle, discontent, and the inherent obstacles in life are not particularly unique to the characters of the American novelist, however the experiences and the perseverance of each have ...
When Owen follows his mission and goes to the army, John is left without a sense of direction. With Owen gone, he has no one to tell him what his next move will consist of. He ends up going into graduate school because he fears the day when he actually has to make a decision about what he will do for the rest of his life. Technically he does make a decision for the rest of his life by going to school for a degree in English, but I see this as the easy way out.
Owen has no hesitation when it comes to his future and his decision-making: “Owen Meany got his scholarship to the University of New Hampshire; he signed up for the ROTC… .” This certainty could also stem from Owen’s strong relationship with god. He is gods instrument, making every action meaningful, making every move count. John has a weak relationship with god and is left doubting the existence of a higher power and a purpose for himself. The productivity deck is stacked in Owens favor because John has to play his own game; he is not just a chess piece being directed by God. He has no idea if his next day will be his last or if his next decision will matter in the least, where as Owen just follows his road map to the date on his grave.
There is a Motif in this book that pertains to Casualties in Vietnam. Through John we see the crippling effects of the War in Vietnam on citizens across America. We see his indecision for the direction of the rest of his life. John continually dwells upon the early death of his mother and of Owen. There is John in the novel, and millions of real Americans, some who have turned against the American government with partial blame for the destruction of their lives.
There is also the statistic that Owen becomes, whether his death is counted as a casualty or not. Irving makes a connection between Owen and the Soldiers in combat; between Johnny and returning veterans to show the reality and regularity of the situation that “A Prayer For Owen Meany” presents. The fact that John grows doubtful and lost throughout the book is only partially his fault. The early death of his mother puts a premature veil of grief over his eyes, clouding his potential for the future.

The other reason is his friendship with Owen. This friendship is a crippling indulgence of Johns’. It is crippling in the way that it takes away Johns power of choice: he only follows the directions of his best friend. Owen has the qualities that John can never have. He is persuasive; he has a mission; he is motivated; he is prepared; he is 100% sure of himself: all these leaving him a very strong man.
John is passive; he has no mission; he has no initiative; he’s unprepared; he doubts himself and his beliefs: all these leaving him a very weak man. Owen is the person that john could never be, he has the character that John could never have, he lives the way that John could never live and he dies in a way that john could never die. He is a crippling weight placed on Johns back, holding him from his greatest potential. If Owens life is crippling to John, then his death is lethal.
In the dim candlelight of John’s life, Owens death snuffed the candle and left John in total darkness with no direction except that of a fading demand that John move to Canada. And so he does, he moves and gets a job as an English teacher in Toronto. Eighteen years after his death, John prays for his beloved Owen: ” O God please give him back! I shall keep asking.”.
