For week five I chose option 2, Ethics Game Dilemmas as my final assignment. I was not sure what to expect of the simulation and what kind of decisions I would face. It was a challenging experience and I learned about myself and my decisions through this process. The first ethical issue that was presented to me in the simulation was answering Gayle’s request for confidentiality. Gayle Dornier was a lead sales representative who came to me, her marketing director with a request to meet to discuss a problem she was facing with confidentiality.
It was brought to my attention from my administrative assistant who thought it was important that I know Bill Witherspoon a Research Scientist was going out of his way to show Gayle attention through various actions. I also received an e-mail from Bill indicating that Gayle was going through a hard time and that her sales were suffering. He believed he was trying to be supportive during this difficult time.
During this exercise I was given two ethical lenses to work with on this issue, Rights/Responsibilities Lens and the Results lens. When using the Rights/Responsibility Lens I thought that I leaned toward rationality and allowed Gayle to maintain responsibility for her actions and I provided my ethical duty by following standard of action. When using the Results Lens, I took an ethical action and encouraged Gayle to talk to me about the problem so that I can provide her assistance.

Both choices I made were reported ethical in this situation. I realized that by telling Gayle that I can keep a personal matter confidential, I also had to let her know that if it were work related I would be forced to report any wrongdoing, and I would do my best to address her concern with confidentiality. The second issue presented was investigating the possibility of falsified and or inaccurate data that may have been used in a medical study conducted by Dr. Phillip Waters the Division Medical Director.
It was brought to my attention from Nikolai Zubanov a Junior Researcher who asked me to help him edit a report. I realized that the data in the report that was not favorable was missing from Walter’s data, and the subjects who had bad results were terminated and replaced by others who had favorable results in the study. After thorough review the numbers in the report did not mesh and appeared to provide incorrect data. Using the Relationships and Reputation lens I leaned toward the Relationship Lens for my best result.
I had to inform Dr. Walters that I would initiate an in-house investigation and I explained my concerns with him without disclosing the information I received from the junior researcher. My decision using the Relationship Lens proved that I leaned toward rationality and justice because I followed policy and confronted my colleague as well as reporting the findings to my Chief Legal Officer. When using the Reputation Lens the best decision indicated, I was using sensibility and I worked with the Chief Legal Officer to come to a solution to the issue.
The ethical lenses played a big role in each of my decisions. It took me quite some time to read through the scenarios presented and I weighed options on my position with each company and what was asked during this simulation. I focused on using equality, rationality, and sensibility when presented with both situations. My role and title in each situation made me think twice before reacting, but ultimately believed that both choices were ethical.

Both simulations provide concepts that relate to my workplace, the first concerning relationships in the workplace, and the second is providing accurate reporting for studies and reports. It is stated in the employee handbook that harassment of any kind will not be tolerated in the workplace. If harassment is reported, I have the ethical duty to investigate the case, ensure that the employee reporting the harassment is aware of the definition of harassment in our employee handbook and also acknowledge, and take responsibility for the his or her actions.
I am also responsible to keep this issue confidential and give both parties the chance to give their side of the story. In terms of reporting data, it is my ethical duty to report any falsified data to the legal department if such case arises. There are general responsibilities for submitting data, such as a proper process for submitting research data and the credibility by authors. Designing policies to deal with complaints of falsification and allowing the person of being accused to tell his or her side of the story, and ensure that this policy is well known throughout the company and by the people involved with the study.
In conclusion, this simulation allowed me to make good use of the tools provided in this course. Getting to use the ethical lenses provided me with different perspectives to come to ethical conclusions. Ethics and social responsibility are very present in our daily lives, being able to apply them is rewarding if done so with knowledge, rationality, equality, sensibility, and quality.
