I feel that I have acquired enough knowledge and experience throughout my lifetime to be awarded credit for an ethics course. People deal with ethical questions throughout their lives and gain experience more valuable than any case study in a semester course. Since most ethics classes would teach via example for my evidence I will present several case studies of ethical dilemmas I have personally encountered in my workplace and in my life. I feel through the course work I have completed in college and the ethical lessons I have encountered in my life have given as much if not more knowledge than an ethics class. If for some reason my case studies are not sufficient then I will request an examination. USING THE WORK ENVIROMENT TO JUSTIFY IMMORALE ACTS For this example I am going to use a common situation which occurs in the military and that is adultery. Legally and morally adultery is wrong but I am going to show and example where someone tries to use his or her environment to justify their actions. Military members are constantly deploying away from their families to worldwide locations. Now for married people no matter what distance you?re away from your spouse you should still be faithful.
The Research paper on Ethics Management Case Study
Ethics Management Case Study After having read a case study, it appears to me that the Sears' scandal, related to its unethical profit-boosting policies, can be evaluated in terms of contradiction between the right-based ethics and the goal-oriented ethics. On one hand, Sears is the commercial enterprise, which has only one priority to make as much profit as possible. From this prospective, ...
This is something I?ve observed while on deployment and I?ve changed all names so nobody is incriminated. Now on this deployment to Europe for two months Mark is away from his wife. However his justification for his actions on this deployment will be the old saying ? what goes TDY, stays TDY? meaning you can do whatever you want on a deployment because your spouse is not around. So while on the deployment Mark proceeded to drink and smoke ,which his wife disapproves of and to have sex when the opportunity arises. He has sex with the local women and thinks nothing of it because in his mind it?s not cheating since his wife isn?t around. So the ethical dilemma here as an observer comes in two parts. Is he breaking the law in accordance with the military regulations and do you have an obligation to turn Mark in? Well according to the UCMJ (Universal Code of Military Justice) Mark is breaking the law, however unless the security police or OSI agents or his direct supervisor observe him he can?t be reprimanded. Also in adultery cases the spouse has to initiate a legal action. Since I didn?t meet either requirement I couldn?t take direct action. I am still however obligated to let Mark?s supervisor know of his conduct and maybe inform his wife.
So the ethical dilemma here as an observer is whether or not to be Mark?s buddy and not turn him or follow the regulations and report him to the appropriate officials. FRATERNAZATION BETWEEN OFFCIERS AND ENLISTED MEMEBERS OF THE MILITARY Here is another example of should you look the other way or turn somebody in because it?s the right thing to do. A not so everyday problem in the military is fraternization between officers and enlisted personnel. Fraternization is defined as; to have inappropriate conduct with a subordinate in you chain of command or between and officer or enlisted person. The system is set up this way so someone who is in charge of you isn?t intimately involved which could affect his or her decision making and lead to favoritism. Once again all names have been changed in order to protect the parties involved. This event also occurred overseas away from homestation. One day a Captain named Dan was hanging out with one of his enlisted members Mary. This in itself is not breaking any rules because they were both off duty. Dan and Mary are drinking and one thing leads to another and they end up having sex. Not only is this breaking the fraternization regulation but Dan is also married so he is now committing adultery.
The Term Paper on Mark Twain 6
When to analyze the works of Mark Twain, it becomes clear that the author’s style is simple and direct. Indeed, the author is very successful in convening his thoughts to the reader. Henry Nash Smith, the critique of Mark Twain’s style once made a remark that Mark Twain’s style is “as close as we are likely to get to the writer’s actual experience … ” (Smith 19). Richard Bridgman’s ...
So one day Dan is drinking with his buddies and brings up his encounter with Mary and starts bragging. Now when his friend Matt hears all this he doesn?t say anything and just lets Dan brag. So now Matt has an ethical dilemma. As an officer himself he is obligated to report Dan for fraternization and adultery. He is also a friend of Dan?s wife so he has a personal interest in the matter. Should he report him or just be Dan?s buddy and keep his secret? While Matt is obligated to look out for his friend he has sworn an oath as an officer to follow military regulations. So the right and legal thing for Matt to do in this situation is to notify Dan?s supervisor and let him proceed with the proper legal action. A common occurrence in the work environment is stealing from your employer. People sometimes justify this by saying well I work here so I?m entitled to certain perks like ?free? office supplies to take home etc. For this case study I will cite two examples of such activities. One day Bob is going down to the cafeteria to grab some lunch. Bob is deciding what to eat when he sees Dominique grabbing some snacks and walking away from the cashier. Bob questions him and says, ?aren?t you going to pay for that?? Dominique replies ? no I never pay it?s not really stealing because they over charge us anyway so they still make money.? Bob doesn?t say anything else and Dominique walks off.
So should Bob turn Dominique into the cafeteria manager? And how can bob prove that Dominique stole in the first place? The best thing for bob to do is to talk with the cafeteria manager and mention that people might be stealing. This way the cafeteria manger can take the proper security measures to monitor the customers. One day Chris starts working at his local grocery store as a night stock clerk. His new supervisor Shane is an unusual person and is showing him the types of tasks he will be doing. Soon it?s lunchtime and Shane is looking for something for lunch. Shane asks Chris if he?s going to get anything. Chris tells him he brought lunch from home. Shane says? well you don?t need to do that anymore because we get lunch for free around here.? Chris asks, ?well how exactly do we do that?? Shane replies? well check this out? and he grabs something from the frozen food section and drops in on the ground and then steps on it. ?Whoops this is damaged? now we?ll have to put it in product recovery. Shane tells Chris that when a product is damaged you empty the package and put it in the product recovery bin to insure the store receives credit so they don?t have to write off the merchandise as a loss.
The Essay on Analysis of Hesiod’s Works and Days
In Hesiod’s piece, “The Works and Days”, Hesiod addresses his brother Perses about how to be a good and virtuous man. Hesiod calls upon Zeus to direct his speech in explaining to Perses how to describe the true way to exist. He starts by explaining the difference between healthy competition and trouble and fighting, Hesiod says “It was never true that there was only one kind of strife. There have ...
Chris says, ?well you damaged that yourself though.? Shane says yeah but the manager doesn?t know the difference and it?s a good way to get free food. We work hard here so should get some kind of perk.? Chris just nodded in agreement and didn?t say anything else. So should Chris report Shane to the store manager or should he just ask the store manager about the stores specific policies since it?s his first day? Chris should find out if Shane is indeed breaking company policy and if he is report him to the company?s loss prevention specialists. I say this because the store manager maybe looking the other way when Shane breaks certain company policies in order to keep the workers happy. In this situation even if Shane wasn?t breaking company policy you should never do something you?re not comfortable with. NOT SHOWING UP TO WORK, BUT STILL COLLECTING A PAYCHECK A common occurrence in the workplace is employees skipping out on work. Sometimes through no fault of their own such as illness or an accident employees have to miss work which is acceptable. In this example we will discuss an employee who just doesn?t go to work and still gets paid for it and feels there?s nothing wrong with it.
In our example we?ll use Kip the Administrative worker in the military. Kip works in an office with too many people, too little work and too little supervision. Kip is also one of those people who just likes to do the bare minimum and may have a drinking problem which contributes to his missed days at work. So Kip decides that once or twice a week he?s going to skip work usually on a Monday or Friday so he has a 3 or 4 day weekend without using vacation time. Now in the military you are paid a salary and could work 5,7 or no days a week and still get paid the same. Kip feels no remorse in getting paid for not working even though his friends go to work everyday. So to try and cover himself on the days he?s absent he makes up excuses to give his supervisor or just doesn?t say anything at all and hopes nobody notices. Kip is bragging to his friend Ted one day how he?s going to have a 4-day weekend and he?s going to this big party. Ted asks him how he?s getting the days off and why. Kip tells him he just makes up appointments he had or says he?s sick. Ted notices when Kip does take days off it?s because he?s too hungover from drinking to go to work or even get out of bed. Ted asks Kip about his drinking and Kip responds saying he?s Irish so he?s suppose to drink like he does.

Now Ted?s ethical dilemma is should he turn his friend in for missing work, which in the military is dereliction of duty and a serious offense. Ted also suspects Kip maybe an alcoholic and needs help. So what should he do? Ted decides to notify Kip?s supervisor about his possible drinking problems and how they might be affecting his work attendance. Ted did the right thing by notifying Kip?s supervisor and made himself feel better addressing Kip?s drinking problem so he could receive the help he needs. Lance is a computer programmer who runs his own software company. He works on small projects as a consultant. Lance is hired by Ace Corporation to write a software program for their accounting department. Lance is coming close to his deadline for the project and isn?t even close to completing the program. Lance decides to take a short cut and borrows part of a program from another company so he can meet his deadline. Lance has not committed copyright infringement by borrowing a program to use as his own. On top of that if he gives the program to Ace Corporation that might also be liable for lance’s actions. So the ethical question lance should be asking himself is twofold.
Should he just tell Ace Corporation he?s not finished and request a new deadline or should he ask the other company if he could use their program and turn in the program on his original deadline? Lance should ask for an extension and if he were to use another company?s programming code he would have to ask their permission as well as the Ace Corporation.
