Explain how Owens use of the Latin Phrase, Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patri Mori relates to his poems message about war. Introduction At a very young age, Wilfred Owen was sent to war; and despite the horrors of such, he was able to write very intriguing masterpieces that had touched or inspire lives of many generations through the years. He tackled the moral lessons of wars, during World War I, through writing and such can actually be used in the future to take actions on the possible emergence of war. In the poem Dulce Et Decomum, he condemned the leaders who have encouraged very young men to join the war. Owen successfully illustrated how cruel war is and how it would affect the remains and the soldiers that had been involved in the war. Analysis Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patri Mori which means Sweet and fitting it is to die for ones country.
If a reader will happen to read the poem fully, the line The Old Line: Dulce Et appears in the last paragraph of the poem. It seems like it is a very ironic conclusion of the poem since the preceding lines of such is talking about the cruelty and effects of the war. Ironic it is, but Owen was just insinuating the fact that such saying, which it is being used to persuade young men to join the war, is not appropriate. Owen, being able to join such a horrible experience, he was successful to communicate what he had witnessed and such latin phrase is unfair and unfitting just to encourage people to join the war. The said latin phrase is so convincing but actually if anyone could personally experience what the soldiers are going through during the war, they are not actually fighting for their country but for survival and eventually come home and join their loved ones. This was presented in the poem in the lines before that concluding phrase and is a very effective technique because if you analyze the poem, reading what had an innocent young man went through during the war whether he survived the war or not, it will bring realization to many that showing loyalty to the country cannot only be shown in joining the war. That at the end of the day, both sides are left with no victory, and there is so much time wasted, that war only brings lives of many people in vain..
