In this essay I will explore how john Steinbeck presents theses minor characters. I will write about how these characters are introduced and their importance to the novel. The two characters I will be looking at are Crooks and Curley. Crooks is a key character in this book. He is the only black person in the novel and throughout he is continuously abused. John Steinbeck has written about him to show how racism was a norm during that era. Crooks was mostly referred to as a nigger and is isolated from others. “ Crooks, the negro buck, had his bunk in the harness room. You can infer that Crooks was openly referred to as Negro. Crooks is an intelligent individual who spends a lot his time reading. Out of his few possessions he has numerous amount of books. ” And he had books, too; a tattered dictionary and a mauled copy of the civil code for 1905. There were battered magazines and a few dirty books on a special shelf of his bunk. ” Crooks isolated position allows him to oversee the acts of the workers on the ranch this allows him to analyse different peoples personalities.
The only time when Crooks is given the opportunity to socialise is on Christmas and even then he is mistreated. “They let the nigger come in that night…The guys wouldn’t let Smitter use his feet, so the Nigger got him. If he used his feet, Smitty said he would have killed the nigger. ” This shows that Crooks was taken for Granted and used for entertainment. It seems as though he is worthless. We know this from when Smitty says, “I would have killed if I was allowed to use my feet. Curley’s wife is another minor character in the book.

Throughout the novel she remains nameless which suggests that she is Curley’s possession and nothing more. She is the only women on the ranch and like Crooks she is isolated from everyone else. Curley isn’t much company. Most of the time he’s out worrying about his reputation and looking for fights. Most of the time she is wondering around looking for attention and flirting with other ranch members to make sure they suffer Curley’s hot-headed wrath and to make Curley feel even worse about himself. seems like she can’t keep away from guys. ”Throughout the novel she is consistently ignored by other character and she thinks that no one cares for her. ” what kinda harm am I doin’ to you? Seems like they ain’t none of them cares how I gotta live. I tell you I ain’t used to livin’ like this. I coulda made somethin’ of myself. ” It seems as though she doesn’t like or enjoy her life. To make herself feel better she goes around picking on weaker people. For example crooks when she says
