I bet you could never guess what my family’s traditional hobby is. Our hobby is drag racing. My family has been drag racing my entire life, and it’s what I live for. It gives us the most fulfilling adrenaline rush you can get on earth. The combination of our history and how we got started is a huge story in itself. Even more so, that big story leads into the next big story of what it has all turned into, and how far I have gotten into this expensive and addicting hobby my family has streamed into my blood.
First comes how my family got the itch for drag racing. It all started way back when my dad was just in junior high and my grandpa was looking for an investment. My grandfather already owned his own mechanic shop and knew how to do most of the work in restoring an old car. That was the start of the itch that we continue to scratch; that is the love for automobiles of all kinds. My grandfather was looking for a good way to invest his money and get the most out of it as he could without going into stocks and things of that sort. He started restoring the old Model A and Motel T cars from the 20’s and 30’s. The restoring of these cars when to the full extent and down to the final detail. For example all the gauges or any small feature was all authentic. Going to car show after car show and winning awards became a huge hobby for them and they soon moved on into the hot rod cars of the 60’s and 70’s. Such as one car that was a 1970 Cuda fully restored and painted a beautiful pinkish color. These faster cars brought in the need for speed to my family and fired up the building of our first racecar. This car began as old rusted out 1968 Charger sitting out in a goat field with animals climbing all over it.

This car was designated to turn into a mean racing machine rebuilt over next two years. The car was redone bumper to bumper and had the most up to date, newest technology that could be found. For those two years my dad was working on that car every night after work into the late hours and wee hours of the next morning. That is when I came into the picture and things got even busier. This car even became a problem at one point in my parent’s relationship. The building was put on hold after I was born because my mom spoke up and said to my dad that he needed to choose the car or us because, he was spending so much time and energy on it. This took a toll on my mom and things had to change. But within the year, the now beautiful big black beautiful car was now finished and, it has won best engineered car multiple times in car shows with hundreds of cars entered. You could say it is one of our best works of art, and the start of this nasty but beautiful relationship of the sport drag racing.
To this day our hobby hasn’t slowed but gotten bigger. We now have two of these money eating cars. Another beautiful 1968 Charger to match grandpas. This car has been my dad’s pride and joy for the last 16 years. This car was brought into the family when my grandpa bought my dad out of the first car so my dad could have a car to call his own. This car too has been gone through from bumper to bumper and everything has changed; in fact, not a single part of this car hasn’t been touch by our hands and been improved in one way or another. This of course has happened slowly over these 16 years because of having two kids growing up are a little more important. The car now is basically almost the same as my grandfathers, the only thing that is different are the motors in them and the paint on the outside. Besides those two features they are both beautiful, full steel body cars that attract a lot of attention everywhere they go. My grandfather’s car even now has change tremendously as the time has gone on. Changing times and keeping up with the Jones’s has caused most of this. The never ending improvements to technology to get that next edge and be more competitive is always digging at those deep pockets.
Saturn Car Essay General Motors

We have gone through a total of 8 different motors between both cars and chassis adjustments have made us keep up with these new times and stay in the loop. Now both of these cars making clear over a 1000 horsepower. My Dad’s car with a 572 cubic inch motor build by us that is capable of 1200 horsepower and my grandpa’s car with a 622 cubic inch motor making around 1400 horsepower. Both cars are a hand full and give you that pure adrenaline rush you don’t get from much else. All this led to me, a 19 year old kid to drive a 1000 horsepower 572 cubic inch hemi driven dragster owned by a good friend Rich Nedbal. I got this opportunity when the interest I showed in cars and racing got noticed by a very generous man that told me to sit and drive his car and license myself so someday I could be qualified to drive his car in an event. Also have the ability to have my own car one day. Now I have been sucked into this sport completely, and there is no turning back. I now have a motor for a car that has a little under a 1000 horsepower that cost me two of my dirt bikes and much backing from my grandpa that wants to see me succeed as he and my father have in this sport. Now there is defiantly no slowing in this hobby for me, only a growth for the love of a dangerous sport.
We have now only begun what we can call the story and legacy of the three generations of competitive Meyer Racing boys. Soon to come, me getting my own ride. Now, the deal was that if I finish college and get myself a good degree and go out and establish myself in this world as an honest, Christian, hardworking, and caring person, and then a rolling chassis car gets giving to me by the dollar of my grandparents and parents that push me to follow their footsteps in being who they are today. Like I said I have my own motor bought and funded by me, but all the work and funding that goes into this car after I get it will be done by me and on my time and money. So to this deal, I said bring it on. It’s all motivation to go out there and make something of myself. Now for the future of my father in this sport. As a young dad, only 41 years old, he still has that fire and competitiveness that you need. The drive and ambition to get out there and be the best is what will get him to keep proceeding with this hobby and tradition that we love so much. Also the skill and talent he has acquired in this sport is truly amazing to some. He can be out of his car for months at a time because of work or different things going on.

Have you ever spend a little time maintaining your car? People use their cars everyday for different purposes. Mostly they use it for traveling to places. Then go out to an event and race guys with way more seat time in their cars during that time and he goes out there and puts cars on the trailer and sends people home likes it’s a piece of cake. So when we show up, people know that big red car is a force to be reckoned with. Now as is for my grandfather, he is now 65 years old and has the experience and smarts many don’t have. He doesn’t get and fired up like my father and I but he doesn’t need to. He is like the old wise owl that sits back until someone needs to be taught how something really goes. He is driven to not prove himself but show being young isn’t always the key. With the multiple championships and wins as he has, when that truck and trailer pull into the pits, he too is a force to be reckoned with and people always know that. Some would say it’s cocky, some say its confidence, by this is just the truth on how these two cars are seen when other racers walk by. The future can be very bright for us in this sport, and very rewarding.
Most of this action has happened all in a town not too far from here, a town called Redding, California. The Redding Drag Strip is a place I have called home for all my life. From the days playing out with the tall dead grass trying to catch the grass hopers in my bug holder, on a hot summer day in my black wranglers and boots, no shirt and an old wore out NHRA hat with the smell of the tire smoke filling the air. My dad and grandfather have been going there sense even before they had the real racecar done. We now have been the most faithful family to that track and have been there longer than even the track owner himself. The track itself is actually on the property of the Redding Airport but it is least to the owner, Bob Liddell, for years at a time. The track is the old landing strip for the planes before the airport updated and redid the new landing strip that is now in use. The track is now the oldest running sanctioned NHRA track that is still in use. The track was built in 1948 by a group of men that were seeking out a safe place to go race and get people off the streets and save some lives. Ever sense then it has been a non-profit ran track with proceeds going into improvements, advertising and paying for the lease to keep the land open. It has always been a great place to meet new people and a family oriented place to be while being competitive and having a great time. This is defiantly a great place to call our home track and the memories that have been made here will never die.

This amazing, adrenaline filled tradition that has been squeezed into my blood lines won’t be leaving anytime soon. The combination of love for this sport coming from my grandpa, dad and I is more so than any of us could explain, all while it’s a great bonding experience and has formed a relationship most don’t have in their families. I can truly say that this three generation of racers have been blessed in everything we have done in this sport and there is nothing that will stop us from remembering the history, the now, and the future for us in this sport we have practiced for so long in our second home at Redding Drag Strip.
