Another reason why fear is acceptable is that many times “fear” is simply a fact and not something to be scared about. Facts can be fearful even though they are not meant to be. Also, fear appeals are nonmonotonic, meaning that the level of persuasion does not increase in proportion to the amount of fear that is used.
Fear is perhaps the best way to change a person’s attitude. Global warming is a prime example of an attitude changer because “climate change is damaging the planet at an alarming pace” (“Be Worried”).
By just hearing this, parents want to know how they can stop this and make a better place for the future. This motivated those who were concerned to start carpooling to their destinations. A personal motivational experience of mines was when my dad would carpool with people in his truck, to places my dad and the people would go. This helped because in a way my dad is helping decrease the burning of fossil fuels. Today, most of my family carpools to make it a better future for the next generation. Also, a coach can “bully their players into doing something they’re reluctant to do. In this case, using fear as a motivator is acceptable since the coach is only pushing his team to do something for their own good”(“Is Fear”).

A prime example of this is that, my coach for basketball would make me do several shooting drills. If I missed a shot, I would have to do countless amount of exercises. Being fearful as I was, I tried not miss a single shot. Motivation through fear can tend to be a “take it or leave it” approach sometimes. This fact is just for the people to know they should help him reauthorize the Patriot Act and if they don’t America will go to war again. People thought this was a terrorizing fear tactic but as simple as it was, this was just a fact.
Finally, using the right amount of fear will give the best chance to persuade the other person. A study of public service messages on AIDS found that if the messages were too aggressive or fearful, they were rejected by the intended audience; “a moderate amount of fear is the most effective attitude changer.” (Perry)Too much fear can be overwhelming to the target and too little fear can not affect the target at all. Ads are also judged for the amount of fear used. An ad of this sort can be a “person vomiting in a toilet and surrounded by empty beer cans” (DeJong).

Even though we think it would be effective for kids to stop drinking alcohol, the reality is that it’s no different because “everyone does it.” Cases like these involve the right amount of fear usage. With that mentality, innocent people usually get caught into the “should I do it or not.” Let’s just say that is was a “grad to forget” (“Don’t”) because driving under the influence while coming home was unfortunately a mess. To conclude, fear is certainly a must in a persuasive argument. Fear is an effective tool that thoroughly motivates oneself from achieving good. To some people, fear can simply just be a fact stating something but sometimes a little too shocking for someone. The amount of fear used in persuasion is also a determining factor on how well the persuasion actually goes. Thus, fear is an acceptable tool to use in persuasion.
