Hundreds of thousands of people die every year because they are unable to pay for their health insurance. Millions of people do not have comprehensive coverage, and millions of others are dropped from their health insurance plans because of their employers. It is obvious that something needs to be done about the health care system in the United States. An ideal health care policy would be one similar to the kind of medical care available in Canada. I propose that we create a national health system that pays for universal health care through the collection of taxes. In this system, the government would set fees and arrange payments, but people would still continue to have a choice of their hospitals and doctors. Such a system would serve the entire public good, the poorest constituents and the rich and affluent alike. A universal tax-supported national program would also help out business, major corporations as well as small businesses, who would no longer have to supply medical coverage to their employees. All workers would get good health coverage, and would no longer need to worry about being under the control of their employers. A universal and comprehensive government-run health program would definitely benefit the entire nation. Clear, consistent tax-support and government regulation is the answer to affordable health care for everyone. We need to establish such a system in the United States to eliminate the deteriorating situation in health care, and to adequately provide for the general welfare of our people.
