A woman is brutally beaten often by her husband time and time again until the point where she just can’t take it anymore and she snaps. One day she kills the one that is making her life a living hell not thinking of the consequences. Frances, a young nurse, is sent to a maximum security prison for the murder of her abusive husband. In prison she has to work off her debt to society by being forced to do manual labor. Many women in the same situation as Frances get fed up with the working conditions and decide to take over the prison. The idea of women taking over a prison is risky, but works in this film and it seems not too far fetched that it could happen.
The characters in this film are rough and tough and when they all get together you see the damage they are capable of. I really liked the way that this film impractically was shot. There was great composition in the scenes and the cinematography was fantastic. I think this would have been a hard task for the cinematographer because the film takes place in prison.
The editing was also good. The scenes look really clean and the action matched well. One part of the movie contained two different scenes going on at the same time and the editor did a great job of going back and forth with the scenes at the right times. This film was really good from beginning to end.
I liked the story and everything worked for what it seemed the director was trying to accomplish. I was really surprised when I found out that the director was a woman. It’s not that I don’t believe that a woman could be a good film maker, but I have not seen too many women with those film making skills. Now I look forward to seeing more woman making great pictures.
