The Crucible is a story taken place in Salem, Massachusetts. The historical period takes place during the witchcraft trials. The historical period is portrayed very well including the language, clothing and historical content. The actors had an English accent that would be typical of the Colonial Americans during this time period.
The makers of the film tried their best to make the film as accurate as possible to actual history. I do realize, in order to make a story into a film, there were a lot of extra fictional aspects added to make the story more interesting. From previous knowledge in US History classes the Film seemed historically accurate. We have not discussed this part in History yet in class so I am unsure of the specifics of the accuracy of the historical content in the Film.
For the most part it is correct. Woman were involved in witchcraft during this time, they were discriminated against because of it and brought to trial. The love story of a teenager is not accurate, it was just simply something to make a movie out of. One inaccuracy as far as the characters was the hanging. In history, all the girls were hung, and on different days not all at the same time as portrayed in the film. The fad did not go away “as more and more people refused to save themselves by giving false confessions,” as movie states.
The opposite was true: more and more people gave false confessions to save themselves as it became apparent that confession could save you from punishment. A lot of small details were left out of the movie including the fact that Betty Parris’ mother was actually alive and not dead at the time. She died in 1696 when the events took place in 1692. These small inaccuracies don’t make a huge difference in the film but do stray away from the actual historic story. The view point being presented is the viewpoint of the people being accused of witchcraft. The main focus is around them.

The film makers did an excellent job in bringing the lifestyles during this time period of people and joining it together to show the difference between the norm and the people being accused of witchcraft.
