Main characters: Sarny Is the main character of the story she gives everything a strong sense of mind. In the story Night John Sarny is a slave girl who is taught to read and write when most slave owners thought slaves were to dumb to read and write. Sarny Marries and have two children Tyler and Deli e who are sold to pay her slave owners gambling debt.
She devotes enough time in the book trying to find her children. She uses her skills to read and write to find her children. Sarny is semi-tall woman who is well built, she is dark-skinned and wears her hair in a wrap. Her journey takes her some of everywhere during her search.
Supporting Characters: Lucy is Sarny’s companion through this literary work. She is thrilled at the war too see white men kill each other over the slaves freedom. She sort of had a change of heart towards all the gore and blood and realized it was a very important war and some men were on her side. Sarny views Lucy as a daughter or a small sister and realizes they need each other. Lucy constantly flirts with men and even soldiers Sarny keeps her in a tight reach about this and hopes she does not do anything stupid. She is a brown skin lady kinda pretty, nice smile and very enlightened.
She also speaks her mind a lot probably as often a possible. Sarny later has a second Husband named Martin. He was always kind to Sarny. He sell fish at the shop were sarny use too shop she was happy with him.
