Piggy’s Point Of View
“Like kids!” I told Ralph. “Acting like a crowd of kids!” He gave me a weird look and placed the down the conch which no longer was in any use to him. “I bet it’s tea-time.” I said. “What do you think they’re going to do on the mountain?” I asked curiously. Right then, as if an idea came into Ralph’s mind, he look up from the ground and hurried up the scar. In front of him were the others, who could be heard from miles and miles away as they laughed and screamed. “Like a crowd of kids!” I once more said as I watched them go on their way. Annoyed from their actions and attitude, I tied up my shoes, gently picked up the conch, and slowly began my way forward. I need to make sure they would not cause any more problems. With the conch in my hands, I hoped that once I get up top, I would have a chance to speak. I made my way through the scar, and then thought the forest. As I came closer and closer to the top, my breath was running lower and lower. Close to the top I could see some kids running back and forth, collecting wood. Interested of what everyone was up to, and what a mess they have probably made, I jogged the last few feet where I came to a halt. Now that I was on the top, I took a few breaths from the cooler air which was no where to be found but up here, and started walking towards what it looked like was a pile of wood and kids enthusiastically surrounding it, and waiting for magic to happen.
I had no idea what they were thinking to do with it since there is no source of fire to be used to start one. Just then out of nowhere I heard Ralph yell out “ Piggy! Have you got any matches?” Frustrated from the fact that they never talk to me except of times when they need me, and the stupid questions they ask, I shook my head trying to avoid a conversation. From seeing the actual pile of wasted trees which seemed smaller from further away, I said “My! You’ve made a big heap, haven’t you?” Then all of a sudden Jack pointed towards me, excited for some weird reason, and said, “His specs-use them as burning glasses!” Just when I tried to back up and say no, I found my self in a circle of boys, and very soon could not see a thing. Jack had taken my glasses. With out them I was almost blind. “Here-let me go!” “Mind out! Give ‘em back! I can hardly see! You’ll break the conch!” I screamed in confusion and terror. In the end when I thought it was all finished someone elbowed me to the side. Confused of what to do and where to look, I stood there helpless by myself. I could see a little but not fully of what Ralph was doing with my specs. After a sew seconds I could smell something burning.

That is when I became even more worried because I could not see a thing, but yet there was a fire starting. Because all the boys are so immature, I did not trust them with the fire, so I tried to back up as much as I could. A minute later I could hear the loud sound of the fire, which was now fully burning. Even more worried, I screamed to Ralph, “My specs, give me my specs!” I saw a figure come closer and closer. I reached out with my hand waiting for the glasses, and felt secure when they were finally back in my hands. As I put them on, I could see almost all the boys dancing around the fire, which now seemed to me almost out of control. The flames were hot, loud and reached almost twenty feet up into the air. Not knowing what to do or say, I found a rock and sat on it waiting to see what would happen next. Even thought the fire was so huge, the boys still ran to the forest and started to collect more wood. As their energy went lower, they stopped and sat on the ground gasping for air. In a matter of minutes, the fire was out, and it made me wonder what this was all about, since there was no smoke. At that same time, almost as if Ralph was reading my mind, he said, “That was no good! There wasn’t any smoke, only flames.” That is when I added, “We haven’t made a fire, what’s any use. We couldn’t keep a fire going, not if we tried.” “A fat lot you tried, you just sat there!” Jack said. Then out of nowhere Simon added,” We used his specs, he help that way!” Happy to see someone support me I figure I could say something from my own opinion since now Simon was on my side and not on Jack’s.

I held the conch in my hand and spoke, “I got the conch, you let me speak.” “The conch does not count on the mountain!” he said, “so shut up!” “I got the conch in my hand!” I said. Seeing that Jack was ignoring me I repeated myself. “ I got the conch-“ Then Jack turned with more anger then I have ever seen in his face and yelled, “Shut up!” I stood there scared, and not knowing what to do. Ralph gave a quick look at the conch, or me and went on discussing the fire, by completely ignoring how Jack was treating me and how he was beginning to break the rules. Exactly then Ralph said that we ought to have more rules. He said, “ Where the conch is, that’s a meeting. The same down here as up there.” Just then I felt like it was time for me to speak. I was about to say something when I saw the anger in Jack’s eye’s and decided to be quite. I didn’t want to start any more trouble. Jack stood up and took the conch from my hands. “ I agree with Ralph. We got to have more rules and obey them.” said Jack which now made me extremely furious because he was the one not obeying them. “Well let the fire burn out now. Who would see smoke at night-time anyway?” Roger took hold of the conch and said.
“I’ve been watching the sea. There hasn’t been a trace of a ship. Perhaps we’ll never be rescued.” Ralph immediately took back the conch and said, “I said before we’ll be rescued sometime. We just got to wait, that’s all.” Even more frustrated now, I found courage to get up and pick up the conch. “That’s what I said! I said about our meetings and things and then you said shut up-. You said you wanted a small fire and you been and built a pile like haystack. If I say anything, you say shut up; but if Jack or Maurice or Simon-“ I stopped, looking over the heads of the boys and down the mountain. There was more smoke coming out then I could ever imagine. “You got you’re small fire all right.” Everyone looked down in astonishment, I repeated my self once more. “You got you small fire all right.” Then out of nowhere someone said,” Shut up.” I looked around and said, “ I got the conch.” This is when I felt like everyone was against me. All I really wanted to do at that point was to run away and never comeback to them. All of a sudden, not knowing what to say, Jack turned towards me and said. “You’re always scared. Yah-Fatty!” “I got the conch.” I turned to Ralph in hopes that he as a leader would support me.

“I got the conch ain’t I Ralph.” Ralph however was not paying any attention to me or what I was saying. “What’s that?” he said. “ The conch. I got a right to speak.” I waited for a reply but what I got was, “ We wanted smoke. Now look-.” With that being said, I felt blood rush into each and every single vane in my body. With anger I got up and said, “I got the conch! Just you listen! The first thing we ought to have made was shelter down there by the beach. It wasn’t half cold down there in the night. But the first time Ralph says “fire” you goes howling and screaming up this here mountain. Like a pack of kids!” Hoping to make a difference I added, “How can you expect to be rescued if you don’t put first things first and act proper?” “Then when you get here you build a bonfire that isn’t no use. Now you been and set the whole island on fire. Won’t we look funny if the whole island burns up? Cooked fruit, that’s what we’ll have to eat, and roast pork? And that’s nothing to laugh at! You said Ralph was chief and you don’t give him time to think. Then when he says something you rush off, like, like-“ not knowing what else to say or add I paused for a second. “And that’s not all. Then kids. The littleuns. Who took any notice of then? Who knows how many we got?” Ralph then said, “I told you, I told you to get a list of the names!. As we continued to argue back and forth a sudden thought came into my head. “That littleun-. Him with the mark on his face, I don’t see him. Where is he now?” It was now clear to everyone that the boy was dead. With me not saying anything more, the situation spoke for itself.
The Essay on Response To self reliance By Ralph Waldo Emerson
I believe that, essentially, life consists of a series of choices. A grouping of these choices in one direction or another makes us who we are, and ultimately we have control over our lives. What makes one person different from another is his own set of choices. When going through lifes motions, we develop certain worldviews and ideas and values to live by. We develop an opinion of what makes a ...
