Summary ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ is a story of a young sixteen year old boy named Holden Caulfield. Holden is telling this story in first person. Holden is a student of Penny Prep an all boys school in Pennsylvania. The book starts in a rest home in California. Holden flashback to four days before the beginning of Christmas vacation. Holden is going to pay a visit to Mr.
Spencer, his history teacher. Mr. Spencer is sick in bed suffering from the grippe. While there Mr. Spencer talks to Holden about his poor grade on his last examination paper.
That Saturday Holden and his friend Mal Broussard, who is on the wrestling team, go to see a movie. They invite Ackley out of sympathy because he never does anything Saturday night. After the boys finnish playing pinball. Holden goes back to his room to write a composition for his roommate Stradler. When Stradler comes back from his date with Jane Gallagher, a girl that Holden has a crush on, he doesn’t like the composition. Holden and Stradler argue, then Holden punishes Stradler.
Holden loses the fight. Holden goes to Ackley room to talk, but Ackley doesn’t want to talk so Holden leaves to look for Mal Bossa rd. Holden starts to pack his bags after he decide not to look for Bors sard. He walks to the train station because it is too late for a taxi. While there he cleans off the blood from the fight with some snow. He catches a train to New York.

On the train he meets a woman who is the mother of one of his classmates. Holden is attracted to the women so he starts to lie about himself. When he arrives in New York he get a room in the Edmond Hotel. Holden is thinking of staying in the hotel until Wednesday when he can go home. It is still Saturday night and Holden is bored so he goes to the club in the hotel. The waiter will not serve him alcohol.
At the next table there are three women who are giggling at him. Holden asks the ladies to dance. Holden find out that the ladies are from Seattle, Washington. After the ladies leave the club Holden gets bored because there are no drinks are and no girls, so he leave. In the lobby he sits down in a chair and thinks about Jane Gallagher. He almost goes crazy thinking about Jane and Stradler going out together.
He stops thinking about her because he gets mad. Holden goes to Greenwich Village, to a club where his brother D. B. used to take him. In the club he meets an old girlfriend of his brother’s. Holden leaves the club and walks home.
In the hotel the elevator operator asks him if he wants a girl. Holden say yes to the guy and he goes up to his room to wait and prepare for the girl. Holden is nerves about having sex. When the girl comes Holden and the girl talk a first. Then Holden tells her to forget it he changed his mind. He pay her the five dollars for her trouble the girl says it’s ten but he doesn’t pay her the rest.
Maurice the elevator operator and Sony the prostitute return to get there five dollars. Holden doesn’t want to give him the five dollars so Maurice threatens him. Holden gives him the money but Maurice doesn’t let him of that easy, Mua rice hit Holden repeatedly. When Maurice and Sonny leave Holden takes a bath and sleeps. When he wakes up that Sunday morning see that he is running short on money so he check out of the hotel and put his bag in a locker in the Grand Central Station. He also made a date with a girls named Sally Hayes.
Holden ate breakfast two nuns from Chicago. Hodden finishes his breakfast around noon. He had two hours to kill before his date so went to Broadway. He bought a record for his sister Phoebe and ticket to a show for his date. He goes to Central Park to look for her but she wasn’t there so he took a taxi to Biltmore Hotel to meet up with Sally his date. They go to the theater to watch I Know My Love, after they went to Radio City to ice skate.

They get in to a argument because Holden tries to talk to her about marriage and she tells him to wait till after college. He get anger and tells her that she a royal pain in the ass. They deiced to meet at ten o’clock. Holden meets Carl Luce at the Wicker Bar. The two have drinks and talk about Holden’s sex life and how screw up it was. After the conversation Luce leaves and Holden stays in the bar and has some more drinks. Holden get drunk and goes to wash his face to sober up. He leaves the bar and walk to Central Park.
While in the park he thinks that he is going to die so decided heading home. So, he walk from the park to his apartment where his family lives. When holden gets home he sneaks in quietly. He goes to his sisters room but she was not there. Sometimes Phoebe like to sleep in D. B.
room so he checks there. He wakes her up, at first she is excited to see him but then see guess that he has been expelled so she doesn’t want to talk to him anymore. Phoebe decided to talk to Holden again, he tells her everything. Holden then call Mr.
Antolini. He convinced Mr. Antolini to see him. Phoebe give Holden some money and then their parents came back so Holden hides in the closet.
When his parents go to bed he sneaks out of the apartment and got to Mr. Antolini apartment. They talk about Holden’s problems and try to analysis Holden. After a while of talking Holden falls asleep. Holden wakes up a few minutes later and saw Mr.
Antolini sitting on the floor next to him patting his head. Holden was scared and quickly ran away. It is Monday Morning and Holden fell asleep in the waiting room in Grand Central Station. Holden starts to think about the night before but then he reads a magazine to stop thinking about it. Holden go to the Metropolitan Museum to meet Phoebe. Phoebe was late.

When she got there she was carrying a suitcase. She decided to go with Holden. Holden tell her that she cant go with her and that she has to go back to school. They go to the zoo in the park and Phoebe rides the carousel. Finally Holden decides to go home. This is where the flashback ends.
In the next chapters Holden is talking to a analyst in the rest. Holden gets help and is going to get out of the rest home soon. He decides to start school in September.
