Forgetting Sarah Marshal is a romantic comedy that depicts the breakup of Peter Bretter, played by Jason Segal. Peter is a composer who is dumped by his girlfriend, Sarah Marshall of five years. When talked about romantic comedy, movies like Harry Met Sally and The Wedding Planner comes to mind that caters only to the female audience, meeting the demands and pleasure of the female section. Despite his vulnerability, Peter is yet a very engaging and attractive character with all his buffooneries. Unlike the conventional hero, Peters character has been portrayed very differently and unconventionallysave chauvinism, ego, and control over emotions. When the movie begins, Peter comes to the scene whos expecting his girlfriend. He opens the door wrapped only in a towel to receive his girl. Sarah drops in to tell him that she will not be able to continue with the relationshipthey should part ways. This news comes as a bolt to Peter.
He does not keep any inhibition to express his emotions. This is aptly shown when he drops his towel, the only piece that covers him. He even refuses to get dressed when requested by Sarah so that they can sit and talk it out. Peter requests Sarah to give him a hug before they part, hoping that this might work. But it does not work. To overcome his grief, he starts hanging out with any lady he comes across, takes her out for dinner and spends the night with her.

His conversation with the ladies ends up in repeated Hi. Neither does he have any reservation to exacerbate his condition. He sobs and sheds tears in front of anyone. He tells his friend that he remembers Sarah telling Hawaii to be her favorite place and so he plans to check out the place. In what ever decision he takes, Sarah is still prevalent in his life. Incidentally, he confronts Sarah with her beau, a British rock star, at the resort hotel in Hawaii. Rachel Jensen, the sympathetic receptionist of the hotel, comes to his rescue to the unpleasant and awkward meeting. The exotic landscape and the beauties hold no importance to him. He spends his vacation weeping in his suite, sobbing aloud. He gets a call from Rachel checking that everything is fine with him. She informs him that people have complained of unusual sounds from his room.
He ensures that hes fine and probably the sound is coming from the floor above. His excuse is nullified as he is putting up on the topmost floor. In his pain, we are in splits. Peter exposes and bares all the emotions synonymous with female characteristicslove, anger, jealousy, sulking, tears, over emotional. From a lousy who likes to lie around his apartment all day wearing sweatpants and munching on large bowls of cereal to writing a rock opera featuring Dracula and puppets, the character of Peter transforms and evolves pleasantly. He takes the heroic stunt once in the movie when he removes the topless picture from the wall of the male washroom (when Rachel is already impressed with Peter) and is bashed badly in return. In Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Peters mission to forget Sarah is accomplished.
The movie is out and out a success in deploying the condition of present single male society where love is hard to get.
