Chapter two of Judy Root Aulette text “Changing American families” is about the history of U.S families with the main concentration on the history of the Euro Americans in the United States. In this chapter Aulette give supporting information on why it is necessary to analyze the social history of families as we begin to further understand families on a whole. This chapter “summarizes and reviews the history of families in the United States from the colonial time period up until the mid twentieth century” (Aullette26).
The chapter demonstrates the transition of families from one economic system to another during specific time periods and analyzing the historical changes. With the author revealing to the reader how families within the United States have actually changed over time and how the development of each economy affects each family.
Based on the information provided in the text on page (26) of “Changing American Families” the whole point of this chapter is to demonstrate how the organization family began to change as the industrial revolution began to formulate. Different sections were incorporated in the chapter to help understand the whole concept of Euro Americans family history in the United States. Within the first section of the chapter the author gave information on U.S history and family throughout different time periods. For example the industrialization, the pioneer era and colonial America was elaborated in brief information. The second section mentioned the ways in which history has been broken down into periods and the way in which these periods affected historical changes. In the last section of the chapter the author described how the women movement has developed as a way of seeking changes in the organization of family in American society. Some important points that were revealed in this chapter were the relationship of two systems, the economical system and family. The information helped to understand the concept that as the economy began to become more industrialized, families also began to change with the economic system. Aullete mentioned that “It is along with the pattern of macro level changes in the economy causes micro level changes in the organization of families” (Aullette 26).
The Essay on Changing Perspective Family Change Texts
How have the texts you have studied this year shaped your understanding of change and changing perspective? In your answer you must refer to your prescribed text, TWO texts from the prescribed stimulus booklet Changing and the listening stimulus material you have heard. Throughout this year, I have studied multiple texts in relation to the Area of Study - Changing Perspective. All of these texts ...
I find it quite relevant to study the history of U.S. families with the first focus on the Euro Americans since the text mentioned that they were the first set if immigrants to enter North America. It is very interesting to see how the history of families of the Euro American were categorized into three different family forms to help break down the whole understanding of its concept. My general perspective on family was that each individual within society defines what family is and whether they consider themselves apart of a family. However Judy Root Aulette opens my perspective on families on a different level by introducing the study of families and its relationship with specific time periods in history that helps to reveal the changes that has accord in family. One can actually state that most families within the United States has moved through the different stages that has developed based on time periods. The contributing factors on the changes with families have been supported by the organization of the economy. It is due to the economy’s fluctuation that causes the affect of families has it undergoes transition due to the time period and historical changes.
In reading chapter two of changing American families I grasped the concept that it is due to the change in the economy on whole that formulate the transition of family types and the expectation and experiences that they faces within their society. Society tends to go throughout time periods and along with these time period I’ve realized that families changes along with economic changes. A deeper understanding of this is that time periods is a way of breaking down changes in history and the chapter demonstrates that families tends t vary over a period of time. My understanding on this chapter is that it analyzes U.S history through time periods and the effects it had on families and relationships.
The Essay on Do Women Really Work Harder Than Men
Do Women Really Work Harder Than Men? One of the standard feminist claims heard every March during International Womens Day and Womens History Month is that women do the work of the world. This argument was publicized by the United Nations during the 1970s (Women constitute one half of the worlds population [and] do two-thirds of the worlds work) and reinforced in 1995 with the release of its ...
Judy Root Aullette did a great job in providing information for readers to grasp the concept on the history of U.S families. One of the most relevant information that she provided to help readers understand the entire chapter was the table 2.1 in the text. Based on previous knowledge in other studies I was familiar with various time periods and some events that took place but this chapter actually reviewed the time periods and incorporate family forms during particular time periods along with economic systems. The first period mentioned in the table was the period during 1620-1780, which is known to be the colonial period where women role was much unappreciated compared to the roles that men played. It showed the relationship with each members and the particular role that was expected for them to play in the household .The actual structure of families within this time was very much known to be patriarchal, which means that male role were dominant and they controlled the entire family structure.
Women role in their society were more for labor rather than holding the title of being a woman. Family was seen as an economic unit by itself and the men the actual head of the institution. Women role was to be housewives and ensure the well being of their families.Auleete used a scenario to support the general understanding of that time period by illustrating of how Sarah mother Ruth who was raised in the 1700 discusses her life on farms, hard work in the house hold, weaving clothes and carrying water, more of hard physical work was performed during these time period. The next family form was the “Modern Family” during the industrial capitalism economic system. This was the time period were families were moving out the colonial time and into the economic system were women now have to split paid work and unpaid work in the household. Where women was recommended to enter the social work force and at the same time take care of their families. Since this was expected of women I greatly consider this a contributing factor of why birth rates declined. Women may have found it very difficult to handle outside paid work along with taking care of families with no room for reproduction. The last family form is known as the “Post Modern “family which is the time period after the formulation of industrial capitalism until present. Women have now been lead into the Working system and it was well needed for either dual earners or allowing children of the appropriate age to enter the work force since there were more single parent due to the high divorced rate or one income earner could not meet the needs of the entire family. My general summary on the chapter is that it demonstrates the inequality among society especially women and men in their family. However the formation of the women movements has contributed to women opportunity and less oppression of women and general equality within American society.
