The first amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. ” but does that mean we should always exercise it? In my opinion, yes, I believe that if you have the opportunity to protest something, you should. However i also believe that there should be restrictions depending on the current situation. or example i think that people shouldn’t be allowed to protests at funerals.
I believe that the privacy of the family is more important. However i’m not saying that when it comes to personal matters one shouldn’t protest but rather when your rights or morals are affected. Constance McMillen, a student in Mississippi, who openly identifies as lesbian was denied bringing a date of the same-sex and wearing a tuxedo to her school’s prom. McMillen took her school county to federal court and won. ow what if you were being denied your right to seek work like the immigrant day laborers in Arizona.
Well obviously you’d fight back. you’re being denied your right to free speech (somehow), a right every citizen in this country not only has but is entitled to. now what if something you created something that had such a huge impact that the government had to block an entire website for the the whole country. “innocence of muslims” is highly controversial short film. o controversial that it got the entire youtube website blocked by the government of Afghanistan. now this brings up the question “isn’t this overkill”? in my opinion, yes. this also brings up another question “how much of free speech should be restricted”? , the short film was not made with the intent to offend anyone. i think that people should be able to make films like this as long as there is a disclaimer stating that it wasn’t made with the intent to offend anyone.

When looking at the United States, the theory was considered important from the Mayflower Compact and on. The theory of "a covenanted people" is associated with Locke, Hobbes, and Rousseau. Our "framers" took all of the ...
Also I think that the people of Afghanistan should be able to view the film and decide for themselves if it really is as bad as everyone says. in conclusion I think that the first amendment should be restricted in some situations, you should fight for your right and there is a limit to restricting free speech. it’s like what larry flynt said “If you’re not going to offend somebody you don’t need the First Amendment”. Well larry, never say never the day isn’t over yet.
