There was a time that I, along with other members of a group, was discussing about whether or not to exclude one of our classmates from our group project for school as he has not contributed anything to the completion of the project because he had a persisting illness. Most of the members of our group strongly felt that he should be excluded from our group as when we submit our project. I, on other hand, opposed their desire to oust him from the group as I believed that it was not his fault to be sick.
Although I was not initially vocal about my objections, I mustered enough courage to air my side and somehow defend our sick group member. Basically, I told them that it was unethical for us to exclude him from our project and make him do a project for his own since it would give him a harder time, considering the fact the he is currently recovering from his sickness. My comment drew several objections from the other members of the group as they emphasized that we worked hard to finish the project and since our sick group member did not contribute anything, he does not deserve credit.
Generally, our arguments resulted in a class of moral values. Basically, the majority of the group’s members had a “reward and punishment” or “merit and demerit” mentality which is the main reason behind their strong objections to my opinion. However, I believed that under these circumstances, their attitude was inappropriate. In the end, after many discussions and debates, we finally decided to include our sick group member in our project.
