“Frida” (2002) is a biographical drama about a famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The film director Julie Taymor managed to represent the most important events of Frida’s biography and creative work. Her most well-known paintings were shown in connection with the events in Frida’s life, so that after having watched the film, one could understand the art of this woman and make their own mind about it. Frida Kahlo’s life was not easy. Being a young girl, she enjoyed her happy life, but one day everything changed.
At the age of 17 she got into a terrible car accident, and it was really a miracle, that she stayed alive. Doctors were sure, Frida would never be able to get up from her bad and make a step, but this incredibly strong woman said: “I will walk! ” And she walked. All her life she felt awful pain in the whole body, but she never gave up. That car accident was the reason of many other difficulties, Frida had to cope with. One of her legs was thinner than another, as a result she had a complex and always wore long skirts. But the biggest tragedy for her was that she couldn’t have children.
Frida loved her husband Diego Rivera with all her heart, and she wanted to give birth to their child, but she couldn’t. All Frida’s emotions, all her pain was reflected in the film. First of all, due to the excellent acting of Salma Hayek. Undoubtedly, it is not an easy task to play a role of such a bright person as Frida Kahlo was, but a famous Hollywood actres Salma Hayek managed to do that. The director of the film Julie Taymor had a difficult task to combine biography of Frida Kahlo with her paintings and the life of Mexico of those times. She did it perfectly – while watching the film you are plugged in the atmosphere of Mexican life, you can easily draw a parallel between Frida’s feelings and her paintings. Moreover, we can see the riot of colors, native costume and music. Every shot is very bright and full of sense. Most of the critics highly appreciated the film. As a result it won lots of prizes in different categories, including Oscar for the best make-up and the best original soundtrack.
Salma Hayek was nominated for Oskar as the best actress, but the winner was Nicole Kidman, who got Oskar for her role of Virginia Woolf in the film “The Hours”. They both deserved the prize, and I can’t even imagine how the American Academy had managed to choose between them. In conclusion I want to add that this film can be very interesting not only for art lovers. Even if you have never heard of Frida Kahlo, you will get a lot of pleasure while watching the film. You will laugh, then feel very sorry and finally admire the incredible strength of this woman.
