Honesty, companionship, and loyalty are the components that configure a true friend. First, honesty includes both persons remaining truthful, sincere, and frank to one another. If there is not a trust between two persons than it is impossible to maintain a friendship. For example, when Susan, a high school teacher, was a freshman in high school her best friend consequently lied about her true feelings for Susans boyfriend, which in turn led to a dispute. Although, this example may be irrelevant to others, Susans friends inability to be honest with her led to the destruction of their friendship. Second, having a friendly companion in life is a necessity in living a full life.
Albert Camus once said, Do not walk in front of me I may not follow, do not walk behind me I may not lead, walk beside me and be my friend. Having a companion is so important for ones self-esteem, confidence and sense of self worth. For instance, many people live through life feeling alone, not knowing that everyone has someone that is thinking about them. The number one person that constantly thrives in everyones life is Jesus Christ and hopefully everyone realizes that He will never leave our side. Finally, loyalty to a friend is the utmost respect one can give. Beethovens famous quote, Never shall I forget the days which I spent with you…Continue to be my friend, as you will always find me yours explains a lot about the importance of loyalty to one another.
Beethoven is saying that no matter what happens to his friend he will always be there for this person. Nothing will stand in the way of their friendship. If everyone would examine their friendships in this perspective there would be less arguments and longer lasting friendships. In conclusion, the three characteristics of a true friend are openness, companionship and reliability.
