Dick and Jane have it all and they can’t get enough of it. The first ethical issue that is identified in the movie is Globodyne’s fraudulent and dishonest financial dealings. One day, Dick is called up to the prominent 51st floor of Globodyne where he gets the promotion he has been dreaming of; he is now the Vice President of Communications. At this point in the movie Dick is made the face of Globodyne. Almost immediately Jack and Frank, the CEO and CFO, tell Dick he will be speaking on a television show called “Money Life with Sam Samuels” to discuss the company.
They tell him he will just be discussing the quarterly projections and ask him to “put a positive spin” on the company. Dick is ambushed by the host, Sam, who informs him that the CEO of Globodyne has recently unloaded a considerable share of his own company stocks. Dick’s responses or lack thereof, made it obvious that he was not aware of anything going on in the company. He is also confronted by a presidential hopeful on the television show who says that companies like Globodyne “pervert the American dream. ” When he arrives back at the office everything is in utter chaos.
All the employees, including the CFO Frank Bascombe, are running around the office shredding and burning documents trying to cover up the apparent corporate scandal that Dick inadvertently uncovered. Dick comes to a mind-blowing conclusion that he was just a pawn in a corporate fraud scandal that has now gone way out of control. This movie provides sarcastic contradictions about morality and the ethics of crime. For one short-lived moment, Dick contemplates prostituting Jane for income but of course because this is a light hearted comedy Jane becomes furious with this suggestion. Not long after her utrage she turns to burglary willingly. Burglary, just like prostitution, is illegal, immoral, and demoralizing. Unlike prostitution, which is a misdemeanor, burglary is a felony. These two criminals are portrayed as good people just trying to feed their son and keep their house, yet the same “good guys” in the audience who would frown on prostitution, enthusiastically support burglary as a practical comedic maneuver. Yet, if Dick and Jane are on the path of immorality, as conveyed by their society’s parameters, they might as well have went with prostitution as a way to make money.

With Jane being such an amazing looking woman, she could have easily earned thousands of dollars a day escorting swanky businessmen, thus attaining the goal of quick cash less unlawfully. The movie snidely communicates to us that dressing up as Sonny and Cher to commit armed robbery, or taking your neighbor’s car and driving it through a jewelry store window is less shameful than selling your body. The definition of robbery is “the act of robbing from a person or presence of another by violence or threat” which is considered a felony; prostituting or escorting doesn’t hurt anyone, for this reason it is a misdemeanor.
Escorting is not “more” immoral or unethical than burglary. Both are unethical acts, so why criticize one and laugh at the other? Are we to admire Dick and Jane for being so in sync with each other’s criminal tendencies? You would think that if a married couple came into hardship and one spouse were to even propose burglary as a way out, the other spouse would object the act out of pure ethics. However, these two actually enjoy themselves to the point of playing “dress-up. ” We not only question their rationality, we wonder at their hesitation of morals at all.
They deem their circumstances justify stealing from others, in part because they feel cheated and stolen from themselves. One more ethical issue is that of the CEO, Jack McAllister, stealing $400 million from the company and its employees but getting off scot-free. The CFO, Frank Bascombe, is fully aware of what Jack McAllister did but is not admitting it to the courts because he is being paid a hefty $10 million to “keep his mouth shut. ” That is until he runs into Dick and Jane at a bar when he is inebriated and out of apparent guilt tells Dick what happened.

At this point Frank, Dick and Jane come up with a plan on how to steal the money from Jack. The movie conveys to the audience that since the CEO stole money from his corporation and all the employees, it is okay to steal the money back from him. All of these ethical issues that Dick and Jane encounter through the movie are solved by one act. After their grand plan of stealing the money back fails, Dick confronts Jack in anger. Dick commands that Jack write him a check to make up for what he took from him but Jack’s ego tells him that Dick’s threats are empty.
Jack writes Dick a check for and insulting $100 and exits the bank. The twist in the plot is that Dick reveals to Jane that Jack walked right into his plan which was to forge Jack’s signature to access the $400 million. The next day, Jack is surrounded by reporters and previous Globodyne employees, all praising him for his kindness and generosity. Jack is stunned when he realizes that all $400 million were transferred to a trust fund to cover the pension plans that had “disappeared” with Globodyne’s downfall.
The movie lets audiences vicariously live through Dick and Jane and their actions of getting revenge on the “top dogs” without bringing on physical harm. The character of Jack McCallister symbolizes all that is immoral in people of high ranking positions. The audience has “Fun with Dick and Jane” as they force Jack to restore the lost funds to every worker for which he has taken, in a fulfilling, entertaining and amusing conclusion. It seems that the Harper’s feel what they did for the former Globodyne employee’s makes up for all the crimes they had committed.
This movie actually predicts the 2008 collapse of corporate culture and economic failure in the US. A good deal of the commentary is real for the general public in today’s world. The film actually ends with a “Special Thanks To” list of executives from corporations that were the center pieces of corporate scandals that took place in real life. These companies include Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, Adelphia, ImClone Systems, Arthur Andersen, Cendant and HealthSouth. The character of CEO, Jack McCallister, was even based on real-life WorldCom CEO, Bernard Ebbers.

Obviously, this film is not intended to be taken seriously. The film is a parody of several corporate scandals of the early 21st century. The film takes an incredibly upsetting issue and helps the public cope with it through comedy. Conceivably it helps relieve some of the anxiety and stress built up from real-life scandals. Society has been taken advantage of by corporate greed and this is one way to deal with it. My personal opinion on the situation is that there are many alternatives to burglary when it comes to providing for your family.
