History Essay Although the Gallipoli Campaign was a great loss for Australia, It created our identity as a nation and brought us closer together as a people. We fought bravely throughout the campaign in the harsh conditions, became renowned for being excellent soldiers & we always had a smile on our face and a joke to crack. Australians made a point of saluting the man not the rank, as it wasn’t your level in the army that gained their respect, it was your attitude and friendship towards them in and after battle. The Gallipoli Campaign was a complete disaster, but this disaster helped create the Australian sense of mate ship and Australia’s Identity with the rest of the world. We were seen as larrikin’s, we loved to show off and have some fun, no matter where we were or what we were doing. We’d take off English officers, we would have races, make bets and we would always have a new offensive joke to tell our mates.
Australians Identity was forged in Gallipoli on the front line and stuck. We were there for many different reasons but we never forgot where we came from and who we were fighting for. We swam in the ocean even with deadly bullets whizzing past our heads. Australia’s Identity and character was truly shown at Gallipoli, which was a main factor in the creation of ANZAC Legend.
As Australians we fought for our country and for our families, we were known to be excellent soldiers and we endured the war better than any other. We were always playing games and telling stories despite having had heavy losses or a freezing night. Even once we realised that it was pointless to continue to storm the beach we kept running as it was our duty to our country and to our friends. We were the fiercest of fighters and the best of friends, there was nothing we wouldn’t do and no man we didn’t know. Our bravery and endurance also contributed to the ANZAC name and legend. Although we lost the Gallipoli campaign, these points greatly affected Australia’s Identity and character and helped create the ANZAC Legend.
