David Soles 2. 13. 2003 Dr. Schnell PSC 101 Sec: 02 Is the System Awash? Most Americans are unaware of the problems of the poor, it is hard to imagine the challenges of poverty, the daily fears of victimization or the frustration of not being able to provide for a child. These central ideas along with many others have plagued the United States’ economy for most of its history.
What do we do with the poor? Who are they and what can we do to help them? Well the answer is a mix between individuality with a strong relativity to the central government. It is here that we find our argument and it is here that we find ourselves at bay with many sensitive subjects. I believe that it is the government’s responsibility to provide for the nation, but it is up to the individual whom is given to, to make a difference with what is given to them. With such problems as minimum wage, unemployment and little to no affordable housing it is hard for the poverty stricken individual to gain some if any ground at all in their quest to rise up out of the bonds of destitution.
There needs to be a “battle plan” if you will to attack this issue of poverty head on. It is here that my plan comes into effect. Many propose simply giving them some sort of aid in food or money and being done with it, what I propose is that you give a little and they take it much further than what was originally thought possible. It is not simply the act of supporting them for the rest of their lives, it is the act of providing a strong foundation for which they can build upon. An outstanding quote from a man by the name of William McDonough states (chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York), “Issues of equity and social cohesion are issues that affect the very temperament of the country. We are forced to face the question of whether we will be able to go forward together as a unified society with a confident outlook or as a society of diverse economic groups suspicious of both the future and each other.” (Collins, Leon dar and Sklar 280) In a broad view the general public knows not of the hardships that a part of the country goes through each day.

I had the opportunity to go to college in Kentucky my first year of schooling. The school that I went to was Union College in the Appalachian Mountains. I really wanted to leave the northeast and relieve myself of all the pressures that are so commonly apparent in our region. While in Kentucky I was extremely close, at times too close to many poverty stricken families.
It was here that I was given a lesson, not in the classroom but outside of it. I found that many more people than I originally thought live in very sub-standard conditions and own next to nothing. I felt tremendously blessed by the whole experience. I realized that coming from a relatively large metropolitan area being very close to Philadelphia I had not realized that poverty condemns many more people a day to a hellish nightmare of living day to day than I had originally thought. I then found out that the general public knows not of its “other” fellow countrymen who live in atrocious conditions and receive next to no help at all. They are not able to help themselves without some type of initiative aid.
It was these experiences that lead me to my conclusion of the unknowing general public. With this in mind it is a growing concern to the stability of this nation that the general public does not know of this growing problem and it is growing. With this mentality the general public attributes failure to laziness or lack of ambition. Without some sort of action on this ourselves in a revolution over poverty.

This is what leads me to believe in the “three”, three distinct patterns or governmental projects that could and in fact will drastically reduce poverty in America while strengthening the economy. These are wealth taxation, affordable housing and living wages with full employment. The first is the most important which is full employment and living wages. The previous statement says it all; with full employment and living wages granted it is easy to see how poverty stricken families and individuals could rise up out of their former shackles to a higher standard. The affected area would then have a larger opportunity to raise their savings if they were given the opportunity for a job with some type of livable wages. Which would have to mean that the minimum wage would have to be raised and stabilized for this new program.
Also the use of unions or otherwise organized groups of collaborated individuals whom look out for one another in respect to their jobs and well being would greatly increase the potential for a higher income. Adding to this would be the elimination of discrimination of anyone regarding race, gender or religious affiliation would most obviously be instituted if it isn’t already in America today (which is also subject to debate).
To fully finalize this aspect of my plan there would need to be a small governmental agency created to take care of only poverty-stricken individuals who are looking for a job. It is not necessarily unemployment, but another department that determines whom would qualify for these jobs other than individuals whom already have had employment opportunities or their spouse has some sort of income.
The target would be individuals who have next to nothing and have been surviving this way for quite some time. For some a home to move into would be a drastic help in aiding on the war of poverty. Owning a house is considered a step toward gaining assets and that is what one would need to do in order to progress out of poverty. With the usage of low-interest loans, grants and separate housing developments with the object in getting the individual into a living environment that provides for a basis. With lowered interest rates for qualified individuals this would provide for a basis in which they not only can build their credit on, but a savings that can be used towards food, clothing and other material possessions that are normally unattainable in their current situation.
The Essay on Poverty in Third World Countries
Helping poor people is ethical behavior and everyone should do it in order to continue our lives. Every year, there are millions of people at risk of going hungry. There are ways people can end poverty all around the world. People can eliminate poverty if we work together to fight it and avoid selfishness. Rich countries often give financial aid to poor countries, but it does not solve poverty. ...
Which is what most Americans base their existence on, which are material possessions. With the institution of grants then the qualified individual would be able to ascribe a basis which to work with so that they can worry about their work instead of where they are going to stay for the night. Although the later part, specialized developments in which individuals can move into with little to no money sounds like the projects that are currently in use in such areas like Queens, Brooklyn or Harlem. It would be in part in areas that are relatively low in crime but cost very little to construct.
With housing taken care of the person is able to take those concerns elsewhere and ultimately become a more productive individual in society. The last part of my “three” plan constitutes taxation of the wealthy. While it remains only a small tax it constitutes much more in terms for less fortunate. This is where some, but not all of the necessary funds will reside from. The taxation of the wealthy is most necessary since they have used their influence in the past and continue to influence public policy in their favor and at times write policy. With the institution of this plan the “elites” can still practice their aggressively business agenda, but the more they gain the more the poverty stricken individual will be able rise.
In this way more money is gained by the “elite”, but then the person whom has not, will then begin to have something. While this tax may likely be very small and receive mixed results at the beginning it will have other sources of income to institute the plan of “three.” The fund raising will consist of moving of funds from foreign aid. The aid might come from such countries that harbor terrorists or used economic and military tactics in their country to ascertain power. Such countries like Egypt whom receive anywhere from three to five billion dollars in aid, but have been known to be in association with Syria. Syria has been known in the past and still is considered one of the largest terrorist countries in the world.
The Term Paper on The Importance Of Brands Logos And Advertisements On Young Americans part 1
The Importance of Brands, Logos, and Advertisements on Young Americans Foreword The effect of advertising on young generations of Americans can be hardly overestimated. As a matter of fact, now we can talk of formation of the whole advertisement inspired youth sub-culture, where the value of things is strongly dependent on its coolness. Comparing to the year 1990, when industry's spendings on ...
This in my opinion will not stand while there are starving children not ten hours away from me. With cuts in foreign aid such as Egypt we can create a large surplus of money to fight poverty on the home front, not in far away lands in which I cannot even see the direct affect of. As to the question of “Is the system awash?” , the answer is most definitely no. With some work and sacrifice the problem that about twelve percent of Americans face every day, which is poverty, can and will be fixed.
But this isn’t a problem that the general public can fix; it must be the government whom initiates these programs and aid for the less fortunate. For without the government we are all doomed to a life of little to no direction. Works Cited Collins, Chuck, Betsy Leonard-Wright, and Holly Sklar.
