Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a kings heir. May the king judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice….May the king defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor. (Ps 72:1, 2, 4) The above quoted paragraph is self explanatory in itself to define qualities and objectives of an ideal kingship model. Arent they suitable to describe the great king Alfred? His ability to organize military is a phrase of extreme brilliance and power even now. He spied risking his life in to the Danish Guthrum’s camp to know their military plans and later fought the Battle of Edington, near Westbury leading to a historical victory. How many kings in past have risked their own lives? There may not be many who have done such endearing act at this front like King Alfred.
After suppressing Danish activities, he focused his attention to naval strengthening in order to reinforce the security of the nation. It was particularly a sign of his great vision which could smell different new invasions like Northumbrian and East Anglian Danes. King Alfred was a messiah of poor. If a king is ascribed as god then King Alfreds name perhaps comes primarily in the line. His kingship was not based on the dictatorship and harsh manipulations to rule but it was his modesty, ability to frame laws and its reinforcement taking care of all people. He churned up the biased orthodox society of that time to uplift the status of education, philosophy and science. He himself was actively interested in religious and scholarly activities. His ability of society organization was immense. The shire system which holds true even now was first introduced by King Alfred.
He never neglected the importance of foreign relations, which is evident from orosius. He always tried to build good relationships with foreign countries to develop trade, human resources and to avoid conflicts and invasions which was lacking in the rulers of those time. The doom book, code of Alfred was a blink of ray in darkness of uncivilized, lawless societies. These laws framed by him are greatly appreciated in modern context and had been frame line since then. He gave equal importance to religion and culture. He had built monasteries and reestablished monks. He practiced religion with utmost sense. If we match his sensibility of kingship as a whole then we can definitely conclude that he was a king who had believed in development of society, its reorganization, and enactment of fair laws, cultural and religious growth. He had mixed sense of democracy, secularism, lawfulness and civilization. Once again it reminds of the great quotation A king who rules by this ideal will have a successful reign.
