This essay will explain how Go Back To Where You Came From 2 is not a documentary nor reality T. V show. By considering the features of both documentaries and reality T. V. programmes’ it will show how these episodes have elements of the two to make the series. A documentary film seeks to tell the ‘truth’. The documentary persuades the viewer that what they are telling them is just the directors’ beliefs and trying to get people to think in the way that themselves already think. They usually include humans strengths and weaknesses e. g.
honesty, fear, hope, anger. Documentaries educate and inform the viewer to bring change to people’s attitudes, values and opinions, not always for the greater good. Quite frequently they also include what is happening or has happened previously to the world outside the film itself. Documentaries construct an argument about the world from these assertions or claims. Every documentary has a voice over, which explains the film in more detail than just what the viewer can see. Reality T. V. uses a different range of features although some are the same.
Voice overs as in documentaries are also in Reality T. V. shows, e. g. Big Brother. Usually the voice overs in Reality T. V. are a celebrity or a well known host. The group of people in the program are specially chosen so they are put into situations so they will conflict, e. g. Catherine Deveny and Peter Reith in the same group. Participants are forced to do things they wouldn’t normally do in everyday life, like going through a warzone with heavily armed guards and travelling by boat. Most reality T. V. shows are sponsored.
The Essay on Reflecting reality in film documentaries
The paradox of reality stems from the fact that it is a combination of abstract and concrete concepts. Abstract since different kinds of reality can be subjectively formed and understood. It cannot be quantified from a single perspective alone. In the meantime, reality is concrete since it is something that each and every individual must readily confront. Reality is part of mankind’s constant ...
World Vision sponsored the show when it first aired. ‘Go back to where you came from 2’ has a voice over narrating what is happening in the show, has a group of people that conflict, e. g. Imogen Bailey and Michael Smith, Catherine Deveny and Peter Reith, Angry Anderson with both women. The group were made to travel to Christmas Island by boat, in which no one wanted to, as well as driving and walking through a warzone being surrounded by armed guards. In ‘Go back to where you came from 2’ some of these features are obvious.
The show is different from a documentary as documentaries try and tell you the truth while the show is merely finding and showing you evidence instead of shoving their beliefs in your face. The show lets you decide for yourself what you think of the whole situation by putting people in a type of environment they aren’t used to and reacting to their actions, sort of like an experiment. By choosing a varied group of people with different beliefs, careers etc. they can draw a wider audience because more people can relate to the people in the show.
This programme has a voice over or narrator who explains the plot and what is happening in the show in more detail. The show has also been edited. The contestants were away for three weeks and the three episodes that were aired only went for an hour at a time. The beginning of the episode shows each contestant and what they look like, what their opinion on the subject is and a quote from the first episode. As well as catch-ups from the previous episodes. Many documentaries last around one hour with everything they want the view to see in that hour. This has numerous episodes so the viewer has to keep watching to find out what happens next.
Reality T. V. usually is made for entertainment purposes but this series is about a serious political issue in today’s time. The show not only looks at how the people react to the situation but also the people living in Somali and Afghanistan. And almost advertises the viewer to want to do something to help the refugees in the country. The series is neither or both a documentary or reality T. V. Although the series has features from both aspects of the Televisional world it is its own kind of show. Which includes voice overs, effects, editing, real people, situations, arguments, credits and episodes.
